And now for the punchline ...

"I should just be able to go in and say "excuse me, I'm a student at MIT" and they should go "oh! well then you're not an idiot! Here's a job and a paycheck"."

Oh I'm definitely one of those 'idiots' that go to MIT. Tim we probably both are. Just ask coach Taylor. Allie, I'll drop in my two cents, even after that 'powers' comment of yours. For the sake of keeping you sane.
Since you've kind of missed the cut-off for getting a kickass engineering job this summer, I'd go for a small local business that does something you like (ie. an ice cream place, coffee shop, something cool like that). The owners will actually give a shit about the place (if it's not a huge starbucks style chain) and you can most likely chat them up and get the job. Milk the MIT thing for all it's worth.
What sucks about work is that there is a huge leap in quality and a very defined line between people who have high school diplomas and people who have college degrees. Since you are one of the lucky middle people, who has the education and brains to hold a decent job, but not the paperwork, you're probably going to get treated the same as the scum who slid out of 12th grade with a 1.2, at least until the management gets to know you. Your best bet is probably to take a shitty job somewhere and try to talk your way up.
i figured some secretarial work, because it requires some skills. i wanted to work at some sort of engineering place but there aren't many around here. i essentially wanted an office job so i don't have to be standing for 8 hrs straight but i guess that won't happen now.
