Brai!

My grandmother is originally South African, and thus the tradition of the braai (or barbeque) is strong in the family. She started a tradition of a South African barbeque in 1993, and one of my favorite memories of her home was running amongst the guests and the smoke from the half-drum barbeque after having stuffed myself with boerewors, lambchops ( Read more... )

It's only the people who haven't tried it who tend to go 'eeew what?'. Some people coat the top entirely with cinnamon, but I find that tends to overpower everything else, so I just sprinkle a bit atop it.

It is a good tradition to have this braai, and I do love going whenever I'm in the area. It's held on an estate that's been turned into a park, and the house could (according to those there) have come from any of the better areas of Durban. Huge trees, the architecture is right...

Man, I'm hungry. Also the melktert sounds a bit like a dessert my family makes called "egg pie," which sounds good to me, really. Them peoples just don't know what they're missing.

I know. :( And it probably is similar. It's just an undyed custard, basically.

The ingredients all sound like normal custard to me. But why does it look like congealed bacon grease? Sounds tasty though, what's not to like with custard+cinnamon?

Haha, I will try to get saigon cinnamon.

As for when I will get there, when is good for you guys? As I say, I have all of Friday after 10:30 free, and nothing planned for Sat/Sun, and it's about a three hour drive all told.

The pie looks pretty darn good to me. My initial reaction was to try to find a way to put espresso into it, though I'm sure that's not traditional.

Seeing as it may be a while before you are in seattle again, can you suggest a good recipe?
