7spells prompt challenge, 2/7, we’ve skipped a bit of story from the 1st fic, but not that much - only about 6/7 months, with 2 of that being summer, so now it’s 7th year, at the New Year Ball - midnight to be precise and they’re counting down together (as friends) *insert Jill going ‘aww’ here* *makes aw/kissy noises* A very appropriate icon today :) don't you think?
Andromeda stood with a group of seventh year Ravenclaws at the side of the Great Hall, but they still had a good view of the large clock which Dumbledore had placed above the staff table to countdown to 1971. The ten of them had all come as friends, as it was much simpler than pairing off and leaving a few people on their own. They had of course agreed that they could spend the countdown with who they wished - the arrangement was typically Ravenclaw Andromeda thought as she stood to one side of the group, she glanced at the clock, ten minutes to go.
She wondered idly if anyone would kiss her at midnight, such was tradition, and which teacher or seventh year would be put out to first foot* this year. Andromeda thought that it would probably be a seventh year since the average age of the male staff was roughly 45 - a little too old to first foot. That let it down to the 20 male seventh years, half of who were red or blonde headed, so that left ten brown or black haired boys. One of whom she had had her eye on since May - a Ravenclaw muggleborn by the name of Theodore Tonks. She had borrowed a textbook from him and something had sparked between them, they had gradually got closer and became friends, but Andromeda still wanted more.
She could see him standing to the left slightly, he was only a rough outline against the illuminated clock, but she could see his mass of wild curly hair silhouetted perfectly in the light - it made her want to reach out and touch it for some odd unexplained reason. The nagging though in her head had come back - the little voice that sounded oddly like her mother or Bellatrix that whispered things about him being a muggleborn brat and not good enough for a Black girl.
Andromeda personally couldn’t care less, she had always told her family what they wanted to hear, but she had never agreed with all of their ideals - why would you hate someone simply because of where they came from - they weren’t necessarily bad at magic, hell Andromeda knew muggleborns that had almost as good marks as her, Tonks included. That was part of the reason why she routinely shut the little voice up and gave her mind over to daydream about Tonks, his smile, his nervous habits and most of all his voice.
She was jolted out of her thoughts by a gentle touch on the arm, she looked around to see Tonks he stood sheepishly next to her as he tried to communicate what he wanted over the din of the hall. A glance at the clock told her there were two minutes left until 1971.
"Hi, Black, Andromeda, I er, was just wondering whether, oh God," he paused, cleared his throat and bit his lip, and then he started again after a panicked look around the hall. "Andromeda, I just wondered whether you would let me kiss you - at midnight I mean, not because I er, like you or anything, but just as a friend - nothing more unless…no, of course not, never mind." He made to walk away, Andromeda caught his arm.
"Hey Tonks, it’s ok, you can kiss me," She bit her lip like he had and kept all thoughts of anything more to herself. Another glance at the clock revealed that it was only thirty seconds until the year changed, she gave him a gentle hug to try and rid him of the rabbit caught in headlights look. It worked a little, but he still kept glancing around wildly.
The countdown suddenly started, the whole school jumped up and down as they paired off and shouted the numbers. "Ten, nine, eight," Tonks put his arms around Andromeda and waited for her to slap him, he was a bit overcautious at times, Andromeda slipped her own around his neck. "Seven, six, five," Tonks grinned at her and the world in general, his head still darted around the room a couple of times, as if he were checking something. "Four, three, two, one! Happy New Year!" The school yelled as a whole, before the silence came as everyone kissed another. Tonks bent gingerly down to give Andromeda a peck on the lips, Andromeda blushed a little and let the kiss continue into more than a peck. Her eyes fluttered shut as a vaguely coherent thought passed through her mind ’Looks like Tonks isn’t the first footer.’
All further thoughts of anything were wiped from her mind as the pair broke apart from their first kiss and they looked dazedly into each others eyes, smoky grey into vibrant blue. Tonks spoke first, "I kinda like you, if you hadn’t realised already." He muttered.
Andromeda nodded, "I know, I like you too."
*First footing is a Scottish New Year tradition - The "First Foot" is the first person to set foot over the threshold after midnight and should arrive bearing the three gifts of a measure of whisky, a lump of coal and a slice of bread or meat.
Symbolising good fortune to come in the form of warmth, drink and food aplenty for the following year, your "First Foot" must be tall, dark, handsome and preferably young in order to have the desired effect. From
