My dreams are long and weird sometimes.
The first thing I remember is being on the U of M Campus^. I was wandering around by myself, and at various points in the dream I had friends with me (just one at a time but it was not constant). The scenery changed from the U of M to a mall, or else there was a mall on campus, at various points. I remember trying to decide where to eat with
jwendl at the mall, and later finding myself in a building where some students were having a Hallowe'en haunted house thing. I didn't have my costume on, so I wanted to take the elevator down to my dorm^^. I couldn't find the elevators because the lights were dim for the haunted house, and there were decorations everywhere. I thought I was about to find them, but I turned into the haunted house on accident. It wasn't scary (at least not the part right where you walk in) but I was upset because I wanted to find the elevator. I turned around and whoever I had been with was gone. This made me mad, and I ran around trying to find them and/or the elevator.
At some point later, my brother and I went to
jwendl's mother's house* to meet the whole family. The house was a confusing array of staircases and hallways and all the rooms were very small. A couple of times I remember looking out a window and seeing one of Justin's sisters** and her friend sitting on the roof talking privately. There was some sort of family gathering going on (Christmas party? wedding reception?) and there had been loads of people there, but most had left. I heard a door open and I told my brother something like, "Oh no, they're all coming back in." All those loads of people came back in. They were supposed to be
jwendl's family, but many of them looked Asian and were covering their heads (i.e. they looked like Asian Muslims). My brother remarked that it was odd that Justin's family had so many Asian Muslims when he didn't look Asian and wasn't Muslim. I said, "Yeah, but he looks just like his mother, doesn't he? And look at his sister!" I pointed out the window to the sister on the roof, who did look a lot like him. But in the dream, his mother didn't really look much like him. She had wavy black hair and that's all I remember. My brother said, "I guess so, but guys are supposed to look like their dads."*** I thought to myself that I never saw
jwendl's dad so I couldn't comment on that, but I didn't say anything to my brother. Then there was some sort of decision made to play a game with everyone there. It was decided we would all introduce each other in order of how old we are, and to make it easier, we would have everyone line up in order by sections of the alphabet.**** Remembering that almost everyone in Justin's family had last names starting with C*****, I figured the first section would be A-B, and then they would split up C into sections. Someone yelled out "OK, let's go A through C!" About 80% of the people went into the other room to line up. I thought how stupid that was. Everyone was supposed to hold signs saying who they were and they could decorate them. Unfortunately most of them had written their names in Korean# and I couldn't read them. As someone was walking past me and Justin to go into the other room with their sign,
jwendl asked what the designs on the sign meant. This woman looked Asian but was not wearing anything on her head. She pointed to where she had written her name, and half of it was in Korean and half was in pictures. There was a strawberry and something else, I don't remember. She said the Korean part is because her mother is Korean, the other part was because her father is from Guam, and she pointed next to it and said, "I studied Cyrillic for a whi..." and then she realized she needed to hurry into the other room. She ran past some other women huddled in a corner giggling because they were too shy to stand up there with their signs.
Some point later, I was sitting on a couch with Aleesha## and I was telling her how stupid it was that they called out "A through C" when almost everyone there was a C. There was something about a toaster going on, but that is fuzzy. Maybe I was making toast as I told her. Anyway, I was telling her she shouldn't do that, but then I said, "I guess you wouldn't have that problem since your last name starts with a Z###." She then launched into the reasons why she decided to hyphenate her name after marriage.####
And that's all I remember right now.
^ This is a dreamstuff version of the campus. None of the buildings were as they really are.
^^ Not only do I not live in a dorm, but none of the dorms are in the same building as non-dorms, so this makes no sense.
* I've never seen
jwendl's mother or wherever it is that she lives, so this is all dreamstuff.
** She was a sister in the dream, but I don't remember any of the pictures of his sisters looking like that.
*** That's just messed up because my brother looks like my mom, except he got blue eyes from my dad.
**** Yes, I realize this doesn't make much sense.
***** This is dreamstuff.
jwendl's last name doesn't start with a C, and I have no idea what other last names in his family are.
# This surprised me because although they looked Asian, they did not look Korean, and when they spoke their language did not sound Korean.
## Aleesha is a former roommate of mine. We shared a two-bedroom in St. Cloud for a year, and we were half of the people in a four-bedroom the year before that. I was in her wedding this summer.
### It really does.
#### I heard that from her a lot.
