My Wheat-Free Experiment

Jun 01, 2012 21:15

A couple of weeks ago I decided to conduct an experiment that involved excluding wheat (as well as a host of other grains) from my diet. There were a few contributing factors that lead me to try this. I had a roommate who had a sensitivity to gluten. When she excluded it from her diet, she lost a considerable amount of weight. I started hearing ( Read more... )

It's not "me" that's saying these things, but the doctor who wrote the book and cites studies of the chemical affect wheat (wheat by itself) has on the body. The enhanced wheat accounts for (I believe) over 95% of the world's crop, so it's not "American" wheat, really. It's been pretty widely adopted.

Give it a read and think it over.

I tried a gluten free diet for six months back in 2008 to help deal with IBS and other stomach issues. I lost a bit of weight, but it didn't seem to improve my digestive system like I had hoped, so I stopped. It seems like a lot of my friends have eliminated wheat from their diets with success however and you're on the same track. Good luck to ya and try corn spaghetti. :)

I've done sorta similar before, cutting out pasta/bread/etc just to see what I thought of it. It does feel better to keep such foods limited. Cutting sodas (and seriously limiting other sugary drinks) completely out of my diet was probably the number one best thing I ever did though; I've felt so much better and I lost my "zomg college, eat everything" extra weight as a bonus. Been sitting at a level healthy weight since. Always interesting to read about people's experiences with dieting, particularly how it makes you 'feel' as well as the physical effects.

I always feel at my best if I stick to fruits, veggies and some kind of meat myself.

Thanks for posting, I found this very interesting. The main reason being that, coincidentally, I haven't had any grain today and yesterday (I normally make couscous as my meal for the week), and I've noticed a big drop in that after-meal sluggishness feeling you described. I don't feel weighed down or sleepy at all, and in fact, I've eaten more today than I do normally. As such, I'm going to continue this wheat-free trend for the week, then do another week consuming grain (which is good because that's AC weekend, and dare I say that's not a good weekend to cut down on my alcohol consumption), and go from there.
