I got nothin. But also, why'd James have to die no matter what? Maybe that was supposed to be Snape's reward. For a while we had that "last of the Potters" thing, but the interview says the Potters aren't really consequential either.
Do you think Snape is that evil? To kill someone because of a school grudge? Maybe he is... Or maybe that ties in with the life-debt theory - he would kind of fulfill his debt to James if he saved his wife, would he? And because he liked her better that James, she should be spared.
I'm quite sure there is some connection between Voldemort's reluctance to kill Lily, and Snape.
Oh, and I don't think Voldy does care about one more murder - so I always thought that he had no real reason for killing James, other that being in the firing line.
There is a really nasty theory at HPFGU with one of their daft acronyms like 'LOLLIPOPS' or something, that Snape was going to get Lily as a reward from Voldi. Yuk. Crap theory I think. Hope.
Eeek. Wouldn't think that JKR'll do something that... low. But I could imagine that Snape persuaded Voldy to try to let her live though (he could always kill her later if she got on his nerves later on). Snape is a manipulative little bastard after all...
