Personally, I was quite surprised by what a positive reaction this film garnered (from both critics and Holmes fans) and it's nice to hear that not everyone thinks it's absolutely incredible. I refused to go see it due to my pathetically stalwart loyalty to Jeremy Brett and The Canon, haha. The trailer and ensuing video clips released online did nothing to shake my opinion. I really try not to hate on people who like it, though, so instead I channel my energies into vociferously agreeing with those who hold view own views... as demonstrated by this kinda rambly comment. I think your critique brought up some really important points (like Watson's eyes, and you hit the nail on the head about why I hated that fight scene).
That's why I posted my "review" (if you can call it that) - I too wondered, after leaving the cinema, why particularly Holmes fans (and very dedicated fans as well) loved it so much. On the other hand, I expected it to be a hit commercially (this isn't meant to sound as snobbish as it sounds, sorry). I'm also kinda loyal to Brett and Merrison, but I think I am open to new interpretations. With this movie, I just didn't get what's supposed to be so great about it - but I rambled on about this in my post anyway :). All the "back to the source" talk from the cast and crew didn't help...
Thanks a lot for backing me up on the fight scene - I thought I was the only one who was disturbed by it!
What you have to remember is that Hollywood doesn't care about what you in particular want to see / what works for you in one of their films. It was produced as a cash-cow and nothing more. It's sad to think in this way but the same can be said for almost every film. The actors were picked because they appeal the the current trend in movie cycles, the same can be said for the Supernatural element of the film. Nobody (but perhaps a die hard fan of the original Sherlock Holmes franchise **coughs**) would want to see it in its olden day glory.
I personally loved it, hopefully I'm off to see it again tomorrow :D
Oh yes, I know that, and I'm ok with it. I'm also aware that the crazy Holmes fans are in the minority, and of course noone will make a movie just for us :).
It's just that the original stories were and still are extremely popular - Sherlock Holmes is "mainstream", after all. Maybe today's need to "polish everything up until you can't recognize it any more" saddens me. The Victorian age is fascinating, if done at least halfway correctly, and the stories can stand on their own. No need to throw empires of doom and big explosions into everything.
