Oh, hey! Another young child with a diagnosed mental disorder misbehaves in a way that would probably just get a reprimand and a long trip to the time-out chair if the child did NOT have a diagnosed mental disorder, but instead is deemed to warrant manhandling, arrest, and a trip to a psychiatric hospital!

I'll try to keep this stuff in mind next time when my nephew is having troubles. He's a lot more autistic than me or my brother are (I think we're both aspies, but on the milder end), and he does get mad and upset a lot for reasons that don't make sense to us. And it's hard for me because I tend to want a logical reason for everything, and in those states he generally can't explain himself logically. Which isn't his fault.

Which is to say that I'll look at him and remember all the times I've bitten myself hard on the hand because I was going utterly bugfuck over some stressor or another and figure whatever he's going through has to be 100x times worse.

Oh, yeah. It's hard to be patient with kids sometimes, period, even if they don't have tantrums. But I think it's important to try, and to not expect kids to have the same motivations as adults, or NT kids to have the same motivations as non-NT kids. And...to not call the cops on elementary school students , which I wish were just universal common sense.
