Spoon-billed Sandpiper in danger of extinction.

This story was sent to our local birding listserve. You can read a similar one, with compelling photos, at Birdlife.org also.
You know, even if they weren't such neat-looking birds, we can't let them go extinct because of our (human) impacts on the world. :( :-/ Less than 200 or 300 breeding pairs in the wild....man.

I have to say, that is one freaky looking bird.

Hey, I saw a bunch of quails outside my backyard the other day- is that significant? They had blue feathers atop their heads.

but that's not his fault that he's freaky looking!
YAY I love quail. :) quail are common in certain areas and habitat. The kind you would have in your neck of the woods are probably California Quail. We have them here too, but I don't see them that often. Quail are so cute. :) Depending on where exactly in California that you are, Californias would be the most common. Down in southeast california they get Gambel's Quail (I have seen them in AZ); the two species look really similar. Or there is also Mountain Quail but they are only in higher elevations; I dunno what elevation you are there.
yay birds!! :D
