My beef with 4th Edition D&D: by Mandy S.

Jul 25, 2008 15:54

I got the chance to play a module of 4th edition for last few weeks with my regular DM and I have to say, I'm not very happy with it.  Now, I am perfectly willing to accept that my pessimistic view is from a crappy module, or that my DM didn't interpret the mechanics as the creators intended.  But, I'll let you know what was bothering me about it ( Read more... )

"You walk into the room."

"What does it look like?"

"It doesn't matter. You're in the room. You see two goblins. What do you do?"

"Is there anything else in the room?"

"No, it doesn't matter. Two goblins. What do you do?"

"...I guess I kill them." That sounds more like a fault of the DM than the module. All D&D is is a bunch of books and dice. The personality has always been up to those running the game and playing ( ... )

Thanks for the link! Yeah, I admit that the fault in that example lies with the DM. Roll playing can be brought into the situation, but it is very hack n' slash heavy, which I don't really like. I guess I just feel that 4th edition is too much like WOW put on paper. Like I said, I did have fun and I'm looking forward to trying in a different situation.

Don't let them fool you. I don't think 4th is streamlined at all. I'm trying to be objective, since I know 3.5 pretty well and am trying to make sure I don't just think this because 3.5 comes naturally now.

But 4e has way more different types of rolls. Each attack has a unique modifier and damage. Many end up being the same, but each has an attack roll listed. In 3.5, a attack is an attack. All your melee uses the same modifiers UNLESS you specially chose a feat like weapon finesse, in which case, you chose it, it's not just a complicated class feature.

4e eats donkey shit.

Also, I believe you CAN multiclass in 4th edition. My brother is doing it in a campaign right now (fighter/warlock).

No multiclassing so much as taking a feat that mimics another class. I'm 98% sure on that one.

I read everything, wow ... I think the DM was just getting his/her feet wet with the new rules, but 'm shocked at the difference I'd think a seasoned person would know how to differenciate (sp?).
I dunnoes, I'd have to be there next game to know for sure.
But, yeah, that is kinda strange.
Maybe this'll show up in here
Youtube on D&D 4th Ed

Hehehe ....
