Books 9-14: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

For those doing the math, it's only 6 books because I read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe last year. I just got distracted by a few books in between. ;)

Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis
The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis
The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis
The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis

I read the books in the above order, which does not follow the numerical indication on the books (at least not in the US). According to the title page in the HarperCollins editions, the books were renumbered according to the wishes of C.S. Lewis. Despite that, I still chose to read the books in their original order - that is, in the order in which they were written. Having done so, I'm glad I chose to read them in that order. I think the author asides that Lewis so often throws into the storyline make more sense when read in the original order.

That said, even after seven books, the random author asides still hadn't quite grown on me. It's a very odd way to tell a story, and while I can understand the concept, I don't really like it. It seems very unprofessional to me, and I'm glad more authors haven't picked up on it. I suppose if I had read the series as a child, which is obviously the intended audience, it may not have bothered me nearly as much. Overall though, I'd have to say I enjoyed reading them, though I wish I'd done it years and years ago. But hey, better late than never, right?

A couple of comments on the individual books:

Prince Caspian seemed really short. I think the next movie Disney is making as a sequel to the box-office hit The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is supposed to be Prince Caspian, and I don't quite see how they're going to get a feature film out of it. I think most previous attempts to make movies out of the books have combined this book with Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and I can understand why.

I actually really liked The Horse and His Boy. It was a different plot-line, and I found it cute and refreshing. Of course, it might have just been than I'm a horse-person and am intrigued by middle-eastern culture. :)

The Last Battle bothered me a bit. It was depressing, I guess, because they didn't win the battle. As nice as the concept of heaven is, I personally would rather experience life. And I really didn't like what he did with Susan's character. That really ticked me off! Oh, and I totally want a unicorn for a best friend now. (Not that I haven't always wanted one, of course...)
