Does this law apply to the idea of civil partnership in general, or just to the term "marriage?" If it allows civil unions for same sex couples and just forbids the term "marriage," then I'm surprisingly OK with it, because really "marriage" is a religious term while "civil union" is a legal one. So long as the government allows the legal union, there's really nothing anyone outside the head of whatever religion is forbidding the "marriage" can do about it.

(If I'm wrong in my assumption about the law, sorry. This is my "I'm just quickly reacting to what you wrote without doing much research because I'm leaving work in the next ten minutes" answer.)

While that accords the same rights, it's still telling un-straight couples that they're second-class citizens.

So, go further. Government only does civil unions; if you want it to also be a marriage, talk to your pastor, or perhaps someone else's pastor who is more permissive.

Or work on changing the law for straight couples - have their partnerships be considered civil unions by the government, and marriages by religious bodies. I'm all for that.

I made a miniposter of this announcement and posted it to the counter of my local coffeeshop. Because I happened to read this while getting coffee. Probably won't be able to get out of work, but... I'm helping!

OK, now that I finally have a chance to sit down and read the bill... Damn, I don't think I can make it because Thursday is my busy day at work and I have meetings straight through until 1:30, but I'm going to post this over on pittsburgh and hope that some of them can come in my stead.
