I honestly believe that John McCain was the better choice for this election. There are many negative points about Obama, but since the McCain campaign has been accused of focusing too strongly on them, I will refrain from pointing them out and instead will discuss why I supported McCain.
1. Pro-Life
This is my number one issue. People say that shouldn't have anything to do with my vote, it has nothing to do with how a politician gan govern the country, it's none of my concern, etc. but I disagree. If I vote to support the rights of the elderly and unborn I'm fairly certain that is my right and if I were to overlook this issue I would be lying to myself and everyone else by claiming to be pro-life but never conidering it when I vote. I believe that there can never be civil rights in our country when we allow unborn children to be killed under the guise of "choice" because we are showing right there that we do not value human life at its beginning. And most importantly: it IS my concern. When people are being killed based on age or ability it IS my concern, it is EVERYONE'S concern.
John McCain was not anywhere near as pro-life as I would have liked, but when he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate I believe he finally aligned himself with the cause I was most concerned with. Say what you want about Sarah but I admire her for her morals and convictions.
2. Experience
Plain and simple: McCain has it. He's built up years of experience and is tried and true. And all this experience isn't just becoming an average politician, he votes with and against the Republican party according to his own values. That's what makes him a maverick and if anyone actually were concerned with ending partisanship they would have voted for McCain who actually has defied party lines in his many years of experience.
3. The War
If anyone in this race understood the severity of war it was John McCain. He was a prisoner of war and as such knows the ins and outs of war, how gruesome and horrifying it can be, but also how important it often is. He understands that it's not just "Let's get the heck out of there as soon as we can" but that it's about working towards our goals and being willing to stand true for the long haul. That is why he would have made the better Commander in Chief.
4. Patriotism
This is controversial, I know, but I feel that John McCain has a greater love for our country than Obama does. This is about more than just an American Flag pin, this is about whole attitudes and the kinds of people one associates with. I fear if I say more I'll end up focusing on Obama's negatives which is what I said I wouldn't do so I'll stop here.
5. Honesty
I value this in any politician and I find that he has shown more honesty in his campaign than his competitor. He may have put more emphasis than necessary on certain aspects of the competitor's life but he never blatantly lied or ignored things the way he did. I also believe that McCain has described his plans with more accuracy than his competition and hasn't told different reporters different figures the way Obama has.
All this being said, I will continue to pray for our new president in the hope that he can help make America the best it can be, because this isn't about politics anymore, it's about the good of the country.
