Sonnets

I think my favourite sonnet is either The Windhover by Gerard Manley Hopkins; or Marnanel's 404 Sonnet.

What's yours?

Good question. Ozymandias, maybe. Or Milton's 20th.

I meant the one I've linked to. I'm sure the nice print of it I have calls it XX...

Ooh, yes. I tend to forget that Ozymandias is a sonnet - the way it uses the structure makes it feel to me very different to most sonnets (though The Windhover is the same - I'd forgotten that was a sonnet until I re-read it today).

When you said Milton's 20th, did you mean the poem you linked to? Most sources I can find seem to suggest that's his 19th, and To Mr Lawrence is his 20th. I'm not sure which I prefer; On His Blindness has more to say, but To Mr Lawrence is lovely to read....

(Actually, maybe someone can tell me - IS The Windhover a sonnet? I had thought it was, as it's 14 lines long, but I realise it's not iambic pentameter; I'm not sure if they have to be.)
