Awaiting the dreaded telephone call!

At some point during the coming week it would appear that my friend will be ringing to inform me that her mother has passed away. This will be very sad but . . . it will be made even more sad by two facts. Nightmare. My hearing has never been fantastic since terrible glue ear as a child with all the operations that followed and not being able to see the person makes it even worse. i hate the phone at the best of time and there are only so many times you can ask people to repeat themselves before you just have to take the plunge.
We've got a punter at work who is Jamaican and speaks patois and no one can understand what he is saying. Seriously, I understand about a third of what he says at best and recently let him get away with something with only a slight ticking off because I couldn't risk getting into too much debate about it!

I'm dreading it as my friend cries even if she has nothing to cry about. How am I going to cope?

Sympathetic noises? Get sproglet to answer the phone and say you've lost your voice? Leave the country?
