How can I possibly pull this off?

I have been working in the legal profession for almost 20 years. I have a nice, comfortable, well paying job, a nice house (unfortunately still renting) a great girlfriend and a dog. However, I have this passion for cooking. I love it so much that I would love to do it for a living. I have taken a couple of classes at the California Culinary ( Read more... )

That's a tough one. You could take out a loan which you could hopefully pay off when you get one of those rockin jobs when you're done. In the meantime, until you figure it out, you could keep taking classes here and there, although I know that's not as nice as full immersion.

Thanks for the suggestion. I would have to take out a loan just to pay for the program (pretty expensive) so I would need MORE money on top of that to live. The other problem is that the Academy doesn't let you take a class here and a class there. It's either the whole enchilada (no pun intended) or nothing. Maybe you can give me a loan after you win the lottery??? :-)

Absolutely! I'll put you on my list. I already promised a friend of mine a sailboat. I asked him how much they cost and he said about 35K - unless I win the lottery in which case he wants the 200K one. lol

Actually, if I win the lottery I'm buying an old historic house to restore and turn into a B&B, so then you can come work for me! But I can't imagine anyone giving up San Fran for NW Arkansas...

So can you take out enough of a loan to cover the program *and* living expenses?

A B&B huh. Sounds pretty cool. I would probably visit and be a guest chef, but you're right, S.F. is too beautiful to leave. I think the solution will be to see how many hours I could possibly work part time while going to school.

save every dime (go ahead and start living on a student budget... it will be good practice) that you possibly can for the next year or two... maybe even pick up an extra job now while you have the time... and then enroll...

You know I was really trying to avoid the old "save every penny" strategy.. :-) But I like your suggestion about living on a student budget, just to see if I could do it. Thanks, you've given me something to think about. You are in the lead for dinner.... :-)

well unless you have a rich aunt/uncle/grandparent, etc. sunnlight June 17 2004, 17:22:29 UTC
that you could hit up for the dough... **grin**

just give me credit in your first cookbook ok (seeing as how we are about as far apart as two people could be and both still live in the US ;)

If I had the rich relative I wouldn't even be working now... :-) If you, Rudy and the Munchkin are ever in the S.F. area, a home cooked gourmet meal awaits....
