Tonight I was told a) that is make a good Head of Department because I was bossy, and b) that I'd make a good Head of Department because I was compassionate.

I think that's a good combination?

I think that 'bossy' tends to be a very subjective description in any case. But yes, someone who gets thing done without wanting to ride roughshod over other people sounds like an excellent combination for any position of responsibility. :)

I too struggle with the word "bossy," I prefer the term "effective"

Yes. Bossy without compassion is inhumane effectiveness. Compassionate without bossiness is lovely, but gets nothing done.
