I woke up with this in my head: if you write, why do you write?

Because I can't not write. I must tell stories.

My reasons are similar to others, I think.

For non-fiction, I write to understand my experiences and to think things through.

For fiction, I write because it's the only way to get the words out of my head. But perhaps it's more accurate to say that I get visions which plague me unless I write them down.

Writing for me has very little to do with being read. Readers can provide useful feedback that I can learn from, but they're not why I write.

I'm another "can't not write". Or at least, can't without serious and unpleasant emotional effects.

Because I'm good at it, and making beautiful patterns is human.
