Would you like to play FKFicFest this year? I'll post our poll soon!
2017 would be our 8th annual game. It's the 25th anniversary of Forever Knight's premiere, and the 21st of its cancellation.
If we play again, and if you'd like me to moderate again, I plan these changes, about which the survey will ask:
Let's move up our dates:
Have stories due in April, May, or early June.
In 2010, we posted our stories in May, the month in which both "Dark Knight" (May 5, 1992) and "Last Knight" (May 17, 1996) first aired. Since, FKFicFest has crept later.
To serve as your mod, I'd like to move the game out of the way of the tsunami that is the busy season at my workplace. In 2016, I tried to push the game after the busy season; I failed. May we try pulling it up before the busy season?
Would people be available and enjoy playing earlier?
(Now, I could end up in the same situation as last year if work VIPs reschedule. Eeep! But I have to try.)
Let's consolidate our venues:
Make most posts DW-only going forward, and import the first 2 games from LJ to DW.
In 2010, we played on LJ only. In 2011, we expanded to DW. In 2012, we added the AO3. I've tried to maintain all 3 venues. I've paid to keep our LJ ad-free during the game's active months.
I'd now like to minimize our LJ: cross-post only the most pivotal posts (not reminders and announcements), import the early LJ-only content, and cease to pay for LJ to be ad-free.
Why?
- For various reasons, many have expressed concern about the future of LJ. Some worry that it may soon fail as a business, taking content with it. Some worry about the data moving to servers that are physically in Russia.
- There's no automated DW/LJ cross-posting for communities. The time that it takes me to manually re-code and load every post for LJ is time that I could better spend answering your questions and enjoying your stories.
- Community post importing - with the original poster maintaining full control through OpenID ownership! - is now available. It wasn't when we first expanded from LJ to DW. This is huge. Each individual poster keeps control of her words, and can delete or edit at will. With this feature, and intending to individually notify each poster whose content gets copied to DW, I feel ethically comfortable making this transition.
A couple of active players still use LJ only. If you're one, please let me know how I can help you! (You may want to look at this
guide to DW for LJ users).
Let's add a new rule to better show respect to each other:
Players must acknowledge the stories written for their prompts.
I'm very sorry that a rule is needed to reinforce this norm. Sadly, FKFicFest has been bruised more than once by recipients failing to acknowledge their writers' work. Our players deserve better!
If you can't commit to acknowledging the story written to fulfill your prompts - even just clicking the "Kudos" button on the AO3, for goodness sake! - then, if you'll please excuse the frankness, please don't play exchange games.
The requirement isn't open for question. The survey questions will be:
- How long should recipients get to reply before being banned from future games? (week? fortnight? month?)
- Is a "Kudos" click sufficient, or should we require a minimum comment? (e.g. "Thank you for writing this story to address my prompt in this game.")
Let me know what you're thinking about what's best for you and for our community? I'll see you soon with that poll!
