Is "subtle" a color?

Is either "Golden" or "Amber" a dark color? I would have said they were both light colors.

But anyway... I just finished re-reading the His Dark Materials trilogy, and inconsistent parallel construction in the titles isn't the only thing that's bothering me.

I know nothing of golden compass (they sit on my shelves waiting to be read) but FYI, I would have said that Amber is a darker color. You may be skewed from lighting, where I agree that it is lighter. But I would expect an Amber crayon to be a deep orange/yellow.

I still don't think amber is dark, and I'm POSITIVE that "subtle" isn't a color.

The substance amber, (In which dinosaur DNA is embedded, as we all know) is relatively dark. Also, in england the first book was called "The Northern Lights" which really messes with your theory...

My only theory is that the titles aren't really consistent, which I don't think is repudiated by the idea that stuff is different in England (which I'm willing to postulate).

Well, seeing as the original title of the Golden Compass was "Northern Lights" I wouldnt worry too much about title continuity. In other news, I am pushing back my departure back to the states a bit (the 25th or so) because New Zealand is awesome. So I'll probably miss you, which is not awesome. And it has been way too long since I've read the books to make any sort of intelligent comments anyways, except that I remember liking them, though the Amber Spyglass least. But that was... 6 years ago? I dunno, whenever it came out. Though I found the end satisfying- probaly becuase I was used to the non-ending of the golden compass and subtle knife, and then having to wait years for the next books to be published.

I am so very totally with you on this.
It really irritates me when books do that - the last two chapters just suddenly wrap everything up, 'deus ex machina' style.
