So I had a thought. What if you could sacrifice a tile to destroy an existing tile already in play, which you then imediately (that turn) had to replace to make a fully legal word, and the sacrifice cost you (20 - pt value of tile sacrificed) points? So for example, you sacrifice an E, you lose 19 points, but sacrificing a J would only lose you ( Read more... )

Yeah, once a long time ago, but I don't know anyone that has it, and besides, it's more fun to modify games and make new ones...

the penalty would need to be based on the usefulness of the tile rather than (or as well as) the tile value. fortunately, what with computer scrabble and simulations and stuff you can actually calculate numerical tile utilities. E turns out to be worth more than J, for what that's worth :) (J actually has a negative utility)

yeah that's one of the things I wasn't sure about. (20-p) seemed the easiest place to start.. i'm obviously entertaining other thoughts.
