Can we talk about what an absolute treat this show is? It is everything the botched up movie never managed to be. It really transports the soul of the books.

Lately I am reading a lot of dark and angry books, while the fantasy and young adult books collect dust on the shelf, but I really need to read "La Belle Sauvage" and "The secret Commonwealth ( Read more... )

You tempt me to give it a go. I haven’t seen a good TV fantasy since Jonathan Strange.

I can wholeheartedly recommend it, the visuals are stunning, the story is not dumbed down or simplified and especially the complexity of the characters is retained. There will never be quite a villain like Mrs. Coulter.

It's one of the less common book-to-TV adaptations that does the source material justice and even expands on it. The setting update (of Will's world) from the 90s to 2020 doesn't hurt it at all.

It's inexpressibly exciting to finally be getting the second and third books, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, onscreen after the movie wasn't followed up on.

And sidenote, it really managed to get across that Lord Asriel is a jerk in a way his characterization in the movie didn't.
