Sort of. I was thinking of the early-mid 20th century detective novels where the detective and his 'assistant' meet coincidentally in nearly every story. Christie's Satterthwaite and Quinn spring to mind; also the detective in A A Milne's The Red House Mystery that I mentioned a few months ago; some of the Hercule Poirot stories also have this dynamic. All are minus the romance, of course.
XD That's really more of a rivals-in-love dynamic, isn't it?
I was basing this on the three options for the main couple in a fic I'm planning out, so I mostly didn't have a particular couple in mind (although if I write the last one everyone's going to think it's thinly-disguised Holmes/Watson).
I'm not sure what this is for, but for me? A little while ago it was option 3), and now it's turned into option 2). There's a great deal less good fanwork for the later, though.
I explained a little more in my latest post, but it's for an original story. #3 is destined to be the most popular in fanfic practically by definition! XD
I like it okay, but I think I may go for #1 instead - I've written a lot of #2.

I still haven't read The Red House Mystery, actually, I forgot all about it. Really must do that.
