✘ PERSONALITY
Tsuna’s biggest fault is that he lacks the confidence to do anything - whether it’s academically, physically, or socially. It’s because of this fault that he gives up on things easily, claiming them to be too hard, or impossible-from doing things to taking tests, to speaking to girls. It was because he never tried that he never had an ambition, or dream - it was as if he lost the will to try to do anything; only going to school to see the one person he admired, and perhaps the only thing he lived for at that very moment. His sun and what might’ve been his inspiration if he had the will to do anything - Kyoko Sasagawa. He didn’t even have the courage to speak to her, even when admiring her so much. His existence was something that was pathetic; messy room, lowest grades in school, not a single friend or anyone besides his own Mother to socialize with. His attitude on his own life was almost a lethargic one.
There are many times that we see Tsuna terrified because his own life is in risk; moments when he’s about to run away because he doesn’t want to be involved in anything potentially dangerous. In the beginning of the series - Tsuna is downright cowardly, running away from anything he viewed as ‘scary’ or any kind of trouble that Reborn had gotten him into. Even during a Volleyball game (that he manages to get himself into), he makes a haphazard excuse as a ditch-effort to quit early.
At first, it’s hard to see Tsuna as anything but selfish; if only for the fact that he couldn’t accept some of the people around him as friends. Whether the reasons were that they were scary, insane, or embarrassing to be around, he didn’t appreciate any of the people who seemed to admire him, if only for the fact that he had never had friends before. He merely didn’t know how to deal with a change like that.
Throughout the series, Tsuna grows dramatically. Though still reserved and polite, he slowly begins more confidence in himself. The words ‘impossible’ become ‘maybe’ as he begins to overcome more and more adversaries. It isn’t merely physical change, but we see change in him mentally as well - the boy that previously had no dreams or ambitions in life would now do anything to protect his friends. Foes that he saw as scary - and perhaps still view as terrifying - become something he stands up against to protect the people he care about. One could say that his world revolves around his friends; sometimes even willing to put his life in serious danger just to make sure that they’re safe.
Spending time with everyone - whether it was watching fireworks, going to the beach, or even getting lost in the mountains - he begins to realize that these people whom he thought so negatively of truly do care for him. This is perhaps what separates Tsuna from other heroes we see in manga; he’s not fighting for fame, or any kind of treasure - he’s fighting for the friends he cares about. He’s training in order to protect the people he cares about; to go back to those seemingly peaceful (but chaotic) days.
✘ HISTORY
Tsunayoshi has a reputation in school as being ‘No Good Tsuna Sawada’. He’s never been good at sports, has never gotten a passing grade on a test, and he’s always late coming to school. He can run somewhat fast, mind you - but by the time he begins to run, he’s tripped over his own two feet. Almost every morning, he trips down the stairs at his own house-
His life is absolutely pathetic, in other words.
When he meets Reborn, that begins to change. Whether it was for the better, or for the worse-
Tsuna himself wouldn’t be able to answer that.
Not that he would talk about his tutor much, mind you. After all, he would believe that a baby is the one that first claimed him to be the Tenth boss of the Vongola family?
On the first day Reborn introduces himself to Tsuna and Nana (Tsunayoshi’s Mother) as Tsuna’s new home tutor. In hopes of getting her son’s grades up, Nana hadn’t hesitated in accepting the offer she had received in the mail just that morning - a home tutor! Surely, that was what Tsuna needed. After all, she believed that he was a hopeless case, school wise as well.
Despite how unbelievable it was - Nana accepted Reborn as a new resident in the Sawada household. He would watch over Tsuna, tutor him in becoming a more reliable student -
Or so, that’s all Nana thought it was.
What she didn’t know was that he had a goal to help Tsuna become a ‘great Mafia Boss’. It only made sense, as far as the Ninth and Reborn were concerned. After all, Tsuna’s Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather was the First Boos of the notorious family.
Throughout the series, we see Tsuna do nothing but deny his involvement of the mafia. Despite the friends he makes because of it-or the powers he develops to protect said friends. After all; the mafia was a scary, dangerous thing to get into; and he’s just No Good Tsunayoshi - not only does he not want the responsibility; he doesn’t want to get into something so dark, so seemingly hazardous.
As he grows closer to his classmates, and begins to appreciate the people around them - he finds himself in situations he never thought he’d get himself into. And the person who thought that he himself was No Good begins to fight and protect those people who became so dear to him.
If he had one ambition, it would be to protect his newly formed ‘family’ (no matter how much he denies that they’re nothing but classmates). Finally, he’s found something to live for - something to strive for.
No matter what adversary he has to face - if his friends are in danger - he’ll protect them with a Dying Will.
✘ ABILITIES
At first, Tsuna doesn’t have a weapon. During the first portion of the manga, his powers or solely dependant on a bullet called the Dying Will Bullet - a weapon that brings out the potential to fulfill any regrets that the person might have before being shot. Whether it’s not speaking to a girl, getting to school on time, or putting out a fire. However, one must have a dying will before being shot or they will die.
Being shot with by the Dying Will Bullet releases a great amount of energy - and more than often, that energy destroys Tsuna’s close. On the positive side, all the energy released makes him focused on that one specific thing he was brought back to do, if only for a short amount of time. However, at first, it only leads to Tsuna’s embarrassment.
As powerful as it is, it’s still not powerful to defeat his enemies.
During one of the more challenging fights he ends up again - he obtains the 27-Mittens, and a new bullet to use. The seemingly useless Mittens turn into Dying Will Gloves--the gloves on his hands going aflame, as well as his forehead. Instead of the energy being released outwardly, Tsuna can keep a more calm composure, helping him focus calmly on accomplishing what he needs to do in Dying Will mode.
After a vast amount of training, Tsuna begins to learn techniques and moves (for example, Zero Point Breakthrough) that the First originally used.
He still has a lot potential, as a fighter and the future boss of the Vongola Family. However, he still has much training to go. Tsuna despises violence, and would never kill another human being, no matter what the circumstance was. With his intuition and his hands as a weapon - he makes a formidable opponent.
What are they bringing to Nuadoria?: His Sky Ring, 27-Mittens, and Dying Will pills.
Third-Person Sample: (this is from another RP.) It was all a matter of instinct.
Well, that’s what Tsuna would like to call it, anyways.
The town, the people he had managed to contact, the situation-
To be jerked out of a life-death situation as he had been so suddenly and into a place like this, Tsuna didn’t know whether to be relieved, or feel panicked at first. The first thoughts that ran through his head were nothing short of his friends, if they were okay, were they in the same place as him---
Much to his relief, or perhaps dismay, they were all here.
Finally out of danger, out of a horrible situation, they were alive.
But, it’s not enough to make Tsuna relax. Of course, for the heir to the Vongola Family, there was never more than a passing moment without another thought of worry, concern. Especially lately, because he’s just No Good Tsunayoshi Sawada--he’s never wanted any of this. He’s never been after power, or a title, and he certainly isn’t one to want to make himself known-but, he isn’t so lucky to escape any of that, it seems. Because suddenly, he’s thrown into this war for power, when all he wants to do is keep his friends safe.
It isn’t fair, really.
But this town-the entire atmosphere makes him feel uneasy. He’s searching around the district frantically, trying his best to dodge crowds and find a familiar face-occasionally bumping into someone (“I’m really sorry!”), or stumbling a little as he does so.
He wants to know if they’re all okay - if they’re just as confused as he is, or if they could tell him what was happening, why they were there, and how they would get back - and maybe, just maybe, he would find Reborn - because somehow, he always had all the answers (and this was probably his fault, right? … Someway! It has to be! Reborn’s always gotten them into some kind of trouble, right?!) and solutions, and he would give Tsuna the push he would often need to actually try to find a way out of things.
--But that sick feeling forms into the pit of his stomach, and makes his heartbeat quicken with that twisted anxious feeling again, and his head pound. That voice-it’s still bothering him! The entire thing made him feel too uneasy for his own good. Almost curious, tempted to go alone, and maybe find out who was speaking to him then - but, curiosity was something Tsuna had learned not to follow so easily, and for once, he can be thankful for Vongola Intuition (he’d never call it that).
He needs to find them first.
They promised they’d find him-they have to. He’d find them eventually, right? Somehow, they always found each other.
… Maybe.
… He hopes.
Still looking around - contemplating on maybe asking a passing civilian on if anyone’s seen--
And he can almost swear that everything stops for a second when that shiver moves throughout his spine. Heartbeat quickens, motions stop, and-
Head quickly turns, and he stumbles backwards, and it’s hard not to stumble, and fall to the ground below him, but somehow, he regains what little composure he has.
“… Y-You!” Stepping back a little, his brows furrow.
And then realization slowly draws in, hazel-nut eyes widening. “… Who are you?”
First-Person Sample: … Eh? This is-
H-How do I--
[ there’s fumbling with the transmitter at first, until- ]
… Hello…? Is anyone there? This couldn’t be the future, could it?! This doesn’t look a thing like Japan…! But the bazooka--
[ shuffling again as Tsuna walks forward, and he stops ]
.. I… I don’t like this place! Something seems wrong! It’s too quiet! I-It’s almost creepy- [ he’s cut off abruptly, and the only sound for a second if the sound of the transmitter falling ]
--Hiiiie! What was that?!
A-Anyways! If Reborn’s here-
I have to find him! Or someone else, at least! Anything’s better than wandering around here alone!
