I wore dreads for two years of my life and it is a chapter of my life that I remember fondly. The earliest time I can remember wanting dreadlocks was in Middle School where my friends reacted with, "Eeewww!" and "You mean you want shit-locks?" It is funny that I read this post today as I was on a walk earlier and so some random girl on a bike. Her hair was prob. to the middle of her back with beautiful long locks of dreads. She was quickly gone before I could compliment her on them but I couldn't help but stop and think about your dreads and how I have fondled with the idea of getting them myself. I know we rarely talk anymore but I miss you and your vibrant presence.

I remember when you got your dreads. It was interesting how they seemed to give you a... means to turn outward a different facet of your personality.

As with dreds on seafairers, I do recall reading that many ship hands had them (what boy hasn't dreamed of piracy and done a little research? :) ) but this may be just selective remembrance. The practical side of me says... long hair of any kind would be foolishly dangerous on a ship, considering all the hazards on board, but that's just a guess.

The story you wrote about the dreadlocked girl who saves the day with her root-like locks is still my favorite. It embodies everything magical and beautiful I love about dreads.

I've still got bits of the grander work that she's in floating around but for the last year or so I haven't been able to find the ambition to put everything together.

You embodied most of what I found magical about that character.

I'm thinking of getting dreads and have been looking for honest, in-depth, and not to mention WELL WRITTEN accounts of those who have had them. I appreciate your writing style and the open-mindedness and honesty of your blog, and your opinion on dreads will definitely help me decide one way or another about getting mine.
