I'm feeling pretty proud of myself right now. I went to pilates and got my butt kicked then spent the last two hours between Safeway and Trader Joe's grocery shopping. Before I left the house I assessed our "left-over" situation and was able to plan meals through Wednesday that are based around them. Good work. We hate throwing stuff out also, but cooking for 2 is still hard even with planning/freezing.
Since we live in the middle of nowhere we've developed a slightly different strategy. If it's not taken for recycling (paper based), bio degradable bits get put into one of 2 piles. Things chickens will eat, and things they won't (which isn't much...). We don't actually have a compost bin, so we hurl the non chicken friendly stuff into one of the ravines to rot. The rest is turned into chicken poop and eggs ;).
I've dug out a large area to compost the coop litter this spring, so we'll probably add the non edible bits to that when it's completed.
