Background Personality:
First and foremost, Tasuki is character from a book in the series written about the four gods.
There is one thing that sticks out about his personality, and that is his blunt speech. Tasuki doesn’t have much of a filter from mind to mouth and generally blurts out whatever is on his mind. Some of which including his not so pretty comments involving vulgar language. What is thought is spoken with no regard about the consequences it leads to. He spent roughly about three years of his life during the impressionable ages of being a teenager. He was quick to pick up the bandit lifestyle. Tasuki is void of manners most of the time (although he still has them when the situation calls for it.) This also leads to improper speech and adapting to an accent. Watase clarifies it to being the ‘Kansai’ accent. His unique form of speech only helps prove that he is a bandit compared to the other characters. Such as “Wha’dya lookin’ at?”
Tasuki has a sense of humor, like most comic relief characters. He enjoys joking around poking fun at other characters, and never means to offend them. Of course occasionally the jokes lead him into being struck or snapped at. Usually he doesn’t take it very personally knowing full well that he deserves the retaliation he gets. In turn, he will often react, and in some cases it becomes a vicious cycle. Although this normally only happens with Tamahome. The characters with similar traits to him are very likely able to share a similar relationship. Tasuki takes joy out of teasing Nuriko. Mostly about how feminine he is and the fact that he acts like a girl. An example, for instance, when they were at a bar and a drunken male began to hit on Nuriko. Nuriko boldly turn down the guy, and shortly after Tasuki commented Nuriko addressing him as “baby.”
His relationship with Tamahome is alike, but different. Rather that poking fun at his appearance or personality. He chooses to go about their first encounter when they fought as enemies. The bandit doesn’t hold a strong grudge but he uses it as a crutch to pick on Tamahome (and it works.)
With Chichiri most of the jokes are light and not quite as dramatic as it is with Nuriko and Tamahome that lead him into small brawls. They are more a poke at how weird Chichiri is and in regards to his “relaxed” behavior.
One thing this bandit enjoys the most is fighting, but not just any fighting, brawling. Specifically bar brawls, but he’ll take what he can get. Tasuki likes to advertise how strong and great he is. Living with a band of bandits has directed him to the crazy, carefree lifestyle. Tasuki doesn’t always provoke the fights that start, and when one is picked with him. It’s 100% certain that he will take the challenge. The bandit won’t always expect to win, but with an ego like his Tasuki is confident that he will. The adrenaline rush and thrill of a fight are like his endorphins. It makes him feel good and happy, for lack of a better word. It’s like his drug in a sense.
Generally when one meets Tasuki, they will notice how angry he seems to be. Almost all of his actions and speech is hasty. His rough exterior makes it hard to get close to him at first. Tasuki is quick to yell at someone or blatantly tell him to fuck off. At the beginning of any relationship it is hard to get close enough to bond with him. Feeling the need to be independent (unless drowning) often won’t ask for help. Along with being angry he is also easy to provoke. Tasuki is a hot head and will fall for emotional traps without a second thought. This leads him into a lot of fights, both physical and vocal.
His history with his family plays a big role in his angry behavior. In a family ran by women, Tasuki was always receiving the short end of the stick. Their constant abuse toward him eventually drove him away. He ran away from home where he had a rough encounter with some bandits that looted him. Shortly after Hakurou showed kindness. At first Hakurou refused to take Tasuki in, and it wasn’t until after he beat Hakurou to the mountain bandit hangout that he decided to take him under his wing.
When he isn’t being angry, he’s whining. Sometime it’s a combination of the two. Tasuki complains about almost everything. If he doesn’t like the food, he’ll complain. If he doesn’t like the company, he’ll complain. If he doesn’t like the situation, you bet he will complain. For a manly bandit he sure does whine a lot. Not to say that whining takes out a lot from his testosterone.
Like any man, he enjoys good alcohol. He is up for a fight when one comes his way. Tasuki even enjoys watching other fights when they’re presented. He’s strong, and well adept to martial arts, as well as archery, and swordsmanship. To match the cliché, he has distaste for feminine things. The only real trait that severs from his man cave like ways is his lack of interest for women. Tasuki hates women to be accurate.
He grew up in a home ran by women. His mom clearly holding the pants in the relationship and being head of the household, where as, the father utterly submissive to her. Aside from his parents, he has five older sisters. Each and every last one of the more mean than the last. It’s implied that while they treat Tasuki poorly, they do hold manners and are capable of being responsible. However, it is because they treat Tasuki poorly, that has lead him to his woman hating ways. You could even say he fears them. Not that you could blame him. They were more than physically abusive, they picked on him emotionally too. Some rumors say it is one of them who lead Tasuki to fear water the way he does and why he can’t swim now. (Not that he has refused to learn.) What was clearly mentioned is his relationship with Aidou. The youngest sister, but his older sibling. For every lack of husband name, and the mention of being old, he had a log hurled at him.
Despite his emotional trauma with women, he is still willing to get intimate with them. Such activity is inevitable when living with a family of bandits who get off to good looking girls. Whether his activity is fully willing or not was never specifically explained. The best example would be when he kidnapped Miaka from Eikan and brought her to the secret hideout that he and Kouji only knew about. At first he didn’t consider it, but after a few minutes he changed his mind and attempted intimacy. Only to have the mood ruined when she was in search of the mark a Suzaku warrior bears. In which he admits that he doesn’t really like girls anyway and gave up.
Along with hating women, he also hates milk, and continues to say that he hates women. It’s kind of a ridiculous excuse, but he sticks to it wholeheartedly. Claiming that his mother smothered and suffocated him with her large breasts while breast feeding him during his very early years as a baby.
Under that rough exterior is a soft guy. Tasuki doesn’t like to show vulnerability so he often wont admit to his true feelings. He chooses to hide behind his angry mask of angst, or just pure hatred. He’s a bundle of emotion that can be considered ‘overly emotional’ at times. He has a lot of feelings and shows them strongly, just as strongly as he shows his “anger.” Behind his shell is a kind and caring man who will go out of his way to help a friend in need, so far out of his way that he will risk his life to protect them. With who he does open up to, he holds with very strong bonds, inseparable bonds. Anyone who poses a threat to his friends is quick to become Tasuki’s enemies. He’ll even kill them if necessary without any signs of hesitation. His compassion is genuine and obvious.
Likewise, when a close friend passes, Tasuki bawls. He takes of death of his friends very hard, this only proves just how kind and sincere he really is beneath the anger. Depending on how close that friend his. His reaction runs anywhere from sulking to being in denial of their death.
Just like his friends, the priestess Miaka is very close to him. He’ll protect her to his death not just as his duty as a warrior, but also by code for their friendship. Tasuki’s relationship is more brotherly with her than intimate. He sees her as a younger sister and thus treats her like one, and being over-protective when necessary.
Similar to his relationship with Miaka, Tasuki also holds a sibling bond with Chiriko. He views his fellow Suzaku warrior like a younger brother. Chiriko, in turn, views Tasuki as his older brother. Together they have a solid bond. He tries his best to be an excellent role model and friend.
Tasuki absolutely refuses to cheat or betray his friends. It’s clear that his friends are the closest thing to him. They have more value to him than he does to himself, and holds a lot of value for himself. If he catches himself betraying his friends he is unable to bear the idea and quickly belittles his worth. In the OVA, Tasuki became possessed by Chichiri’s old friend Hikou. Hikou tried to get Tasuki to rape Miaka while she was drunk. Upon which he figures out that he nearly hurt her for the personal gain of another and betrayed Tamahome as friend. He was quick to opt out and commit suicide for his treason. If not for Mitsukake saving him from his fiery grave, he would have died.
In a fight, he will go to the end, even if it means death. Tasuki isn’t the type to run from a battle he’s in no matter how hopeless winning is. Regardless of the damage he takes while fighting he will not shed a single tear. Refusing to cry despite how much pain he might be in. It follows along his drive to be a man, and not show weakness. This proves to be quite an irritable trait to his foes. One of his better traits in a fight is that he never gives up. He’ll muster as much courage as he can to motivate him to continue. Instead of being beaten down into submission, Tasuki only becomes more dominant and more resistant.
Tasuki can’t swim (but not entirely.) He fears large bodies of water because of it. His excuse is that he’s a man of the mountains and has no need to know how to swim. It’s quite possibly one of his ultimate weaknesses. He becomes very vulnerable and even asks for help. It is most likely a comic relief trait but very real. Tasuki fears drowning and certainly doesn’t wish to die that way. On one occasion it was show he actually does know how to swim. It was revealed only under the heat of the moment. Tasuki stumbled in as Miaka was drowning in the lake. He quickly raced in to save her. Showing that he can, in fact swim, but only when the moment truly calls for it. Because shortly after upon Chichiri’s arrival, he pointed out that Tasuki was swimming. Immediately Tasuki reverted and began to drown again.
Strengths:
Phsysical:
Hakurou taught Tasuki everything he knows about martial arts. For the few years he spent with the leader, he quickly learned everything that had to be taught. While he may not master in it, he still bears enough skill to use it. His martial arts focuses around the Judo style. He’s a worthy adversary that can even keep up with Tamahome, who practices a different style of martial arts. A style more adapted to physical attacks rather than grappling, throwing, and joint locking.
During the attempt to go retrieve Tamahome, who they found out became brain washes, Tasuki was provoked into fighting him. During their battle Tasuki was shown to nearly out match him. As pointed out by Nakago, he is capable of holding his own weight during battle.
Another thing Hakurou taught Tasuki was archery. He too, learned it quickly, and became great at it. His aim is precise and usually on the mark. Even while manipulating fire to strike someone. Tasuki was never shown wielding a bow and arrow, though he has the ability and skill to use it. It’s theorized that he enjoys hand-to-hand combat too much (hence bar brawling as a hobby) to fight at a distance.
Tasuki was also taught to wield a sword by Hakurou. Just like the previous skills above, he quickly learned how to effectively fight with a sword. Double-edged or single was never truly specified, but it’s safe to assume that he can use either when necessary.
Then of course is brawling. Tasuki is fully capable of throwing and taking punches. He enjoys this enough for it to be a hobby and will sometimes go out of his way to start one. It varies on how bored or rowdy he is. Alcohol often plays an important role when it comes to brawling. Especially bar brawling.
Because Tasuki was born a Suzaku warrior, he was gifted with enhanced speed. It’s his trait alone and no one else’s. The first show of his speed was when he was introduced. Tasuki salvaged Miaka from Eikan, the self pro-claimed bandit leader, in at the blink of an eye. Just as quickly as he snatched her, he fled with her. Tasuki moved so fast that Suzaku warriors thought wind might have engulfed him. It’s clarified that he moves three times faster than the average human. Tasuki doesn’t use this ability often in battle, or anything else.
His crystal tessen (formally iron until converted by Taiitsukun) is also a weapon. Generally used for its ability to conjure fire rather than as a physical weapon itself. Taiitsukun made it so only Tasuki could draw the flames from his tessen, and no one else. Normally it takes an incantation to draw the fire from the tessen, but Tasuki is more than efficiently skilled at it that he doesn’t need to. However, this does not stop him from using it anyway.
He has learned to hone the fire better than even the previous bandit leader. He can do something as simple as catch fire to a few strands of Miaka’s hair. To third degree burning Tamahome. To creating a fiery tornado. To even creating a flaming barrier out of it. His manipulation of fire is to be taken seriously in this regard. Tasuki also uses it the most in battle.
Shown throughout parts of the series it has been revealed that Tasuki holds a lot resistance in battle. He’s endurable in a sense where he can take more than his fair share number of hits. His stamina is equally as high. Tasuki is very capable of lasting pretty long in a battle regardless of whether or not he’s winning or losing.
Mental/Emotional:
Tasuki is incredibly determined. Nothing can get him down once he gets going. The more he’s beaten on the more resistant he becomes. He’s one of those people who you can’t torture information out of. Ever. Tasuki would sooner die than submit to anyone he’s fighting. Even in dire situations, his determination enlightens him with hope. It’s fighting for the people he cares for that gives him the strength he needs.
Once he bonds, he bonds strongly. Though his bonding only works when the second half is willing to open up to him. His drive to do things for the greater good is inspired by his friends. They’re admittedly his everything. (To the point where he’ll die for him if that’s what it takes.)
There are times where he is and acts stupid. To the contrary of his comic relief behavior he is actually a quick learner. Tasuki doesn’t need to practice too long before learning how to do it. The best examples of this are when Hakurou takes him in at the age of fourteen and trains him. In the span of three years he easily honed everything there was to be taught.
Weaknesses:
Physical:
Tasuki is afraid of the water to put it simply. It’s plain to see that he’ll avoid it like the plague and freak out when he’s dragged toward it. This is because he can’t swim. It also happens to be one of the few occasions where he’ll show complete vulnerability. He also doesn’t do a very good job hiding this fear of his. When in the vicinity of bodies of water it becomes more obvious the longer he is there.
Aside from his speed, durability, talents and strong will, fire is his only real weapon. This does make it easy to take advantage of. This leaves room for plenty of weaknesses to overwhelm it, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be water. Just apprehending his weapon alone will disable him from using his fire.
It also comes down to him being human. Although being a Suzaku Warrior allows him to surpass normal humans, he’s still not immortal. He can die just as easily as anyone else, and can only draw his warrior powers when he has strong passion to defend the priestess.
Tasuki is no way stronger than everyone else. Bearing the strength an average man his age has, and perhaps even slightly more than that. There is a lot of leeway for him to be overpowered by someone stronger than he is. Technically he hasn’t even reached his twenties, and therefore not full grown. In some way this can be a disadvantage depending on what the fight is. (It may also not be.)
Mental/Emotional:
Tasuki doesn’t have a filter. He speaks before he thinks, and often acts on impulse. This leads him into a lot of trouble, or end up with unnecessary causalities. Like his desire to fight for the priestess with Miaka when Tamahome caused her emotional pain. Tasuki didn’t have to fight Tamahome. He could have escaped with Chichiri and Miaka, but instead he chooses to fight. Which ultimately lead him to be critically wounded to the point of unconsciousness.
Shown throughout parts of the series, are Tasuki’s emotions. When he isn’t busy being angry it is clear as day that he is a very emotionally driven person. He’ll let it tell him what to do rather than thinking about it. With a snap of the finger he can become blind with anger and far too fluster to fight coherently. This also makes him very easy to provoke. Soon you can dictate him just by rubbing him the wrong way, giving him the disadvantage in any kind of battle. Tasuki isn’t one for a poker face, if you will.
Additionally he isn’t too bright. While he isn’t exactly stupid, he isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer either. In fact he’s quite slow about things. You could say the he is “the last to know” when something happens, or “the last to get it.”
Another flaw (which can be argued as strength) is his arrogance. Tasuki is beyond arrogant. It’s something to expect when you live with a gang of bandits who all share the same ‘holier-than-thou’ attitude. It inadvertently leads him to underestimate his enemies regardless of whether or not he can beat them.

‘EY NAKAGO, FIGHT ME IF YA HAVE WHAT IT TAKES!
Grrr, I swear I’ll kill him. Seiryuu bastard ain’t seen wha’s comin’ yet!
Guess I better see where I am. Ain't no help jus' standin' 'round here doin' nothin'.
Third Person:
It felt like hours since he started wandering around this place. It didn’t look like any region in China he’s even seen. He wasn’t in the Konan Empire anymore, this much he was aware of. The vegetation, the animals; It was all different. He was probably in a different country at best! Or maybe this is what he was like to die. How much longer was this walk going to draw out? “Jus mah fuckin’ luck.” He complained to himself as he continued his travel. Sure, he could have ran and reach something by now with his enhanced speed. There was no guarantee he would actually reach anywhere either. Tasuki hasn’t even found his friends or Miaka yet.
Shortly after his complaint, he stumbled upon a village, a decent size by the looks of it. To his surprise he saw a handful of people already, each one looking different than the last. Where they all foreign to each other? Maybe, just maybe he was in Miaka’s world. Tamahome made it there before. Didn’t he? He could have done the same. The redhead was contemplating whether or not he should ask someone about his friends. He would give a description of them if needed.
He was about to make a move when something peculiar caught his attention. It was the wings on the backs of the citizens who lived here. They ranged with all sorts of different colors, but kept an average size. Some bar codes were visible one the necks of the people who had short hair. This caused Tasuki to absentmindedly reach behind him and feel for these wings. Surely enough they were there. It didn’t strike him before, but now that he was aware of their existence they were kind of sore. Even to touch. “Son of’a bitch.” The bandit drew in a sharp breath. He really did it this time. His hand traveled to the back of his neck. Just as he figured the bar code didn’t feel like it was there. It must have been similar to a tattoo or something of the like. “This ain’t Miaka’s place. It ain’t Konan either.”
