Pairing: David Ferrer/Rafael Nadal
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters and this is a fiction.
Summary: David is dying to get a kiss from his boyfriend.
David was pouting on the grass, waiting for Rafael to finish his practice. They were boyfriends and shared a nice flat but contrary to expectations, David wasn’t too happy.
‘Why wouldn’t he kiss me? My lips are normal, no?’
He let out a dramatic sigh and looked over at his boyfriend. The unkissing Spaniard was clearly enjoying his practice with Robredo.
‘How can he look so happy? He has never kissed me and he still looks that happy? Something’s wrong.’
David groaned, kicking himself for not being bold enough to just ask for a kiss. He had tried on a few occasions to ask nicely but whenever Rafael got close to him, he was too busy drooling.
‘What can I say? I’m born shy and he’s shy too!’
The unlucky Spaniard wished that the practice would soon be over so that he could give it another try when Rafael and he got home. He himself had been practicing with his good friend Igor who had no problem running to his boyfriend Dmitry’s place, leaving him alone.
‘Bad Igor. Couldn’t he wait with me like friends normally do? And it’s not fair! He always gets kisses every morning and every night!’
David spotted a few daisies near his knee and picked one of them.
‘He loves me. He loves me not. He loves me....’
The petals fell under his hand one by one until only one was left.
‘He loves me not.’
He couldn’t believe it.
‘Urgh... Wrong flower. Let’s try again.’
So he tried again.
‘He loves me. He loves me not. He loves me... He loves me not.’
David focused on his breathing, reminding himself that this was a highly inaccurate result which had no real meaning to it.
‘But it still feels bad, no? Maybe it was the wrong thing to ask.’
So he dared the question that had been bothering him for the last couple of days.
‘He’s cheating. He’s not. He’s cheating.... He’s not.’
David let out a sigh of relief, feeling a little bit better.
‘Good flower, this one.’
He patted the flower that had lost all of its petals and threw it away.
“Ferru! I’m finished!” Rafael shouted and David looked up.
“Okay. Let’s go home.”
The short walk home was casual as usual. Rafael spoke about how slow the court felt to him and David nodded, agreeing with every word that he heard.
But David’s mind was elsewhere; the kiss that he never had. They had been together for a while but as long as he was concerned, Rafael had never even tried to kiss him.
‘Does he have eyes? Can’t he see that I want a kiss? He’s completely blind, no? Maybe he really is a pirate. Fake eyes.’
As soon as they were back home, David decided to act. He couldn’t just die young, not being properly kissed by his lovely boyfriend.
So he went straight into the bathroom, brushed his teeth until they shone like in a commercial and gargled his throat. Then, he shaved and combed his hair so he could look as good as possible.
‘Now where was that lip gloss that I got?’
David went through the cabinet and found the magical substance.
‘I hope it doesn’t look too strange.’
He applied a considerable amount of the shiny gloss and went out in the living room.
Rafael was talking on the phone in an excited tone when he seemed to flinch a little as he saw David sit on the couch. David knew that he had to wait for his boyfriend to hang up so he turned on the TV and pretended to watch it when all he could think about was getting a kiss.
‘I’ve been having strange dreams, no? And it’s getting sexier and sexier every night.’
The truth was that the poor Spaniard had been haunted by dreams since a couple of nights ago; dreams in which he was getting a kiss from his boyfriend while he was asleep in his bed. And each night, the dream became more vivid and the kiss became deeper.
Then, David suddenly slapped his knee and came up with a theory.
‘Oh, I know why he doesn’t want to kiss me! He’s a bad kisser!’
He knew that his theory couldn’t be wrong.
‘He was a great kisser in my dreams but in real life, he isn’t! So he’s afraid to kiss me!’
Very satisfied to find out the reason behind his misery, David smiled with pity at his boyfriend who just wriggled his eyebrows and continued talking into the phone.
‘So my dear Rafa looks perfect but I found out his weakness. Aha!’
Now David was in a much better mood. In fact, he was even feeling bad for the other Spaniard since he was developing another sub-theory which involved Rafael’s inexperience in kisses.
‘Hmm... He should know that it’s okay even if he’s never kissed anyone before. I have kissed a few times so I can teach him.’
It was good to know that there was something that he could teach Rafael Nadal. David put on a grin full of pleasure and heard Rafael finally hang up.
“Rafa, I have a question for you.”
He couldn’t wait to find out the truth.
“Ok. What is it?” Rafael asked, sitting on the couch next to his boyfriend.
“It’s okay to tell the truth. I will not be disappointed.”
Rafael had no idea where this conversation was heading but he nodded. “Well, thank you. So what’s the question?”
“Um... have you ever kissed before?” David knew that it was too straight forward but he had never been good with words whenever Rafael was close.
“Yes, I have.”
Not only the answer was not the one that he had expected but the speed of the answer clearly shocked the wide-eyed Spaniard.
‘What did he say? He has kissed before? He can’t be lying if he answered that fast, no?’
David knew that he was riding his luck but he couldn’t just back off without another try.
“But you don’t like kissing, do you...?”
He knew that it was a very weird question to ask, especially asked in a negative form, almost inducing the answer that he wanted to hear.
“I like kissing. Very much.” Rafael didn’t even blink while answering and David felt his heart chopped into pieces.
“No, you don’t. You don’t like kissing, haha... You can’t.”
“Yes, I do like kissing. That’s what I just told you, no?” Rafael wasn’t sure what had gotten into his boyfriend. He was certainly acting strange.
“You’re okay, Ferru? Perhaps you should lie down. Maybe you have a headache or something.”
David thought that he might get a real headache if he stayed in the living room any longer. So he went into his room and brought out a handful of used tennis racquets.
“I’ll be back in ten minutes.” He announced and went out to the backyard.
Smash.
SMASH.
This was the reason why David never threw away his old racquets. He could always smash them to death whenever he got upset.
Another racquet just lost its frame and David fumed.
‘He likes kissing? Very much?’
He still couldn’t accept Rafael’s answer.
‘No! He can’t like kissing! He can’t! When he has never kissed me!!’
Another racquet went to heaven and David couldn’t control his anger.
‘Do I have to beg for a kiss? Do I? I’m older than him. I’m not going to beg for anything. I have a lot of fans who will immediately line up if I told them I would kiss them, no?’
He stopped smashing his racquets for a moment and touched his lips.
‘They feel okay to me. This is soft enough, no?’
Frustration crept into his mind and he decided that destroying racquets were enough for the day. So he cleaned up the mess and gathered the racquets that had cheated death.
When he turned towards the house to walk back in, he thought that he saw a shadow quickly disappear.
‘Did Rafa watch me? Well, he already knows that I smash racquets, so no surprise.’
Then the rest of the day went on as if nothing had ever happened. David tried his best to enjoy his supper and the quiet evening time and he noticed painfully that Rafael did no attempt whatsoever to kiss him.
“Good night, Rafa. It’s my bedtime.” David yawned, exhausted from all the thinking that he had done.
“Good night, Ferru. See you in the morning.” Rafael hugged his boyfriend and rubbed his cheek against the sleepy face.
Usually that sort of action melt David’s heart but tonight, it just felt childish.
The next morning, David jumped out of bed, all pumped up.
‘It’s today or never! I shall get my kiss!!’
His dream from last night had been too intense. He was sleeping in his dream as usual when his dream boy came inside his room as usual. But what had happened next was far from the usual routine. Rafael hadn’t been gentle or caring when he had kissed him last night. It was all about pure possession and rough desire.
David found himself drooling again and quickly wiped his chin with the sleeve of his pajamas.
‘Okay, no more wet dreams like this.’
So he washed, changed and put even more lip gloss on than yesterday and headed for the practice courts with Rafael chattering gleefully right next to him.
‘What’s he glowing about?’
David wasn’t particularly pleased to see his boyfriend excited about something that he wasn’t aware of.
‘Huh... well, living a life as one of the greatest tennis players is worth glowing, I guess.’
He got out of his thoughts as he saw both his and Rafael’s practice partners already on the court. It was time to practice.
After a few hours, it was a deja vu for David all over again. Sitting on the grass, waiting for his boyfriend, cursing his friend who left him alone again.
‘It’s okay. I’m in a good mood today. Because today, if nothing works, I’ll just ask for it. Nothing’s wrong with asking your boyfriend to kiss you, no? He won’t think that it’s weird. I hope.’
“Ferru! I’m finished!” Rafael shouted and David got up.
“Okay. Let’s go home.”
Then, the unthinkable happened.
In slow motion, he saw Rafael give a peck on Robredo’s cheek, saying something to the other Spaniard that he couldn’t hear.
David didn’t know what to do, what to think.
‘What did he just do...?’
Rage overwhelmed him and he had never been more furious and sad in his whole life.
“Ferru! Wait for me!!”
He heard Rafael yell but he didn’t stop and wait. In fact, he picked up his speed and started sprinting at some point.
“Ferru!! Wait!!”
David was soon caught by the twenty-two year old athlete but they were already at their door. The broken-hearted Spaniard yanked the door open and marched into the house, clearly displaying his anger.
“Ferru, why are you angry?” Rafael put his tennis bag down and asked in an innocent voice.
David almost laughed at the question. “Why am I angry? You don’t know why?”
Rafael took a minute to think about it but he eventually shook his head.
“Why did you kiss him?” He could never be subtle around Rafael.
“Robredo? That was just a peck, no kiss.”
“Okay. So why did you gave him a peck?”
Rafael shrugged. “I don’t know. It was just saying goodbye. He’s going to a different tournament next week, no?”
David knew that he would regret it and would look awfully babyish but he couldn’t stop his lips from saying the words. “So you can give a peck to someone who’s not even your boyfriend and you can’t do the same for your boyfriend?”
Rafael’s eyebrows moved and David couldn’t stand the calmness on the other Spaniard’s face.
“You want me to give you a peck?” The indifferent tone poured gasoline on David’s anger and he exploded.
“You think I want a peck from you? That’s what you think, Rafa? We’re not six years old, no?”
Rafael giggled, not aware of the fact that it infuriated his boyfriend even more.
“Hey! You’re laughing at me? You think this is funny?”
Rafael tried to put on a straight face. “No, I think you’re being cute.”
He started giggling again.
“Cute? You think I’m cute? Well, guess what! I’m done being cute! I’m going to start looking sexy from now on! Very very sexy! Because cute doesn’t even get me a kiss!! Everybody kisses! Even on streets! And I can’t even get one inside the house!!”
He knew that he talked too much but it was too late. Suppressed words kept flooding out of his mouth and it was unstoppable.
“You know, Rafa? It’s your loss if you don’t want to kiss me. You know why? Because I’ve got this awesome cherry lip gloss that a fan gave me and it smells very nice! You have no idea!! And I’ve been told that I have soft lips!! People want to kiss me out there!! So I’m not the one who’s losing here! It’s you!!”
Rafael was now almost bent in half, suffering from uncontrollable laughter.
“Yes, you keep laughing when I go outside and kiss everybody!! I won’t beg for a kiss!! I can get a kiss without begging!”
David could see Rafael wipe his eyes and rub his jaw.
‘What’s so funny? He’s gone mad, no? Crazy Rafa!’
So David got all of his used racquets out on the backyard and smashed every single one to pieces. He skipped dinner since the last thing on his mind was food and hopped early into bed.
‘Bad Rafa. He doesn’t even come in to check if I’m okay.’
David punched the bed cover a few times and tried to get some sleep.
‘I should sleep. Anger would go away a little, no?’
But as an hour’s attempt turned out to be unsuccessful, he started to count sheep.
‘One hundred and sixty two Rafas, one hundred and sixty three Rafas, one hundred and...’
Suddenly, he felt someone open the door and enter his room.
‘Oh, so he decides to show up after three hours. How thankful...’
He closed his eyes shut and made sure that he looked like sleeping.
“Ferru? Are you sleeping?”
Rafael asked gently but David didn’t answer.
“Ferru...?”
David could feel a warm hand cover his cheek.
‘Okay, I’m still angry but his hand is very warm.’
Then he felt a soft pair of lips lay on his own.
‘Wait a minute. Did I fall asleep?’
Rafael’s lips started nibbling and soon after, David was getting a full kiss.
‘Um... I must have fallen asleep! This is exactly what happened in my dreams! But when did I start sleeping? I don’t remember, no?’
The kiss was deepened and David had to moan, clutching the shoulders that fit perfectly in his hands.
And when Rafael’s tongue swept the bottom of his mouth, David realized.
It had never been a dream.
tennis slash,
kiss me
