The only formula you need is God = Love.

Something that's always been very off-putting to me about the Catholic church is the bigoted attitude it displays towards homosexuals. So I was very surprised by an article in the Irish Times today about the disproportionately high number of young, gay Catholic priests.

I have no idea what attracts people to the priesthood. My father is currently in the process of becoming a hospital chaplain, and it completely blows my mind why anyone would want to sit with dying people and tell them that this was god's plan for them. I mean, I'm not exactly sure that he does just that, but it would seem that that's what a religiously-affiliated hospital chaplain would do [if there even ARE non-religious people who do the same thing]. It actually disgusts me a little bit.

I guess that probably, people do it becuase they actually believe in god, and want to serve god in whatever way possible.

us heathens will probably never understand. =p

But [as far as I know] your church doesn't teach that your dad's an abomination =P

ah. i didn't realise that you were talking specifically about gay people being drawn to priesthood.

maybe it's just the fact that they are regarded as an abomination, that draws them to it. I mean, if you buy into the fact that you're evil and an abomination, aren't you going to want to do something to fix it? I can't think of a better way to get down with god and show him that you're still a fan. there's probably no better way to be get forgiveness...

At the risk of sounding incredibly cynical - getting to spend the rest of your life living in very close proximity to other men and not being thought strange for it because, after all, you're a religious figure? And people are *surprised* that some gay men choose that path?

*rereads* No, there's no way I can make that sound less cynical, is there?

Priests don't count as people.

Great post. It really needs to be talked about, especially in respects to Ireland, and America as well. Christianity just plain pisses me off.

Ahahaha wow, amazing formula...? I assume you go to a private Catholic school?

The think is, the atmosphere has not been so religiously fanatic of late.

The change in attitude the school shows to you once your in 5th year is amazing. I mean, there are no words.

If you had told me last year we'd be discussing gay rights and abortion and the most effective methods of contraception in class I would have laughed at you, but now it seems normal.

We let our guard down and the poster caught us unawares =P
