I apparently suck forever at updating. Expect a better post soon, but in quick and dirty iPhone form:
- saw X-Men First Class and kind of loved it a whole lot, even though it sent my inner fangirl into waves of rage at the incorrect canon. May also have started writing Alex/Hank/Raven against my will.
- have been watching Game of Thrones (but am ( Read more... )

I completely agree on your Game of Thrones and Katniss thoughts.

I feel like I hardcore lucked out in terms of female literary heroes growing up, from Hermione Granger to Violet Baudelaire to Lyra and that this generation of girls have only really had Bella up until this point, and she's hardly a hero.

I also kind of want to order my thoughts and do a proper Game of Thrones post, but it's super hard when most of my thoughts consist of fdatgi gjgkf itbtrabnaertam!

Seriously! Although, I mean, when I was little, my main girl-heroes were Anne of Green Gables/Emily of New Moon, and uh, the Babysitter's Club. Imaginative and fun, but not especially ass-kicking. Trixie Belden mysteries were a little more serious in tone, but she wasn't exactly an action girl-- but still, she was awesome. I weep for the millions of girls around the world who think that Bella Swan is something to aspire to.

edited because when do I ever get a reason to use my Lyra & Pan icon? NEVER, THAT'S WHEN.

Lyra and Paaaannn! I love them so much! Still! I'm currently debating whether or not to reread the series. I feel like the 90s and early 00s gave so much more in terms of kickass ladies. I was also pretty partial to Sailor Moon. :) I didn't know Anne of Green Gables or Emily of New Moon! Have I missed out?

And yes. The thought of Bella being anyone's idol is devastating to me. I mean, it's not even in the sense that she's such a passive character (even though, yes, that too), but it's that she's such a non-character. There's nothing about her that's even marginally inspiring or even engaging. She's got no real sense of identity outside of the fact that she is clumsy and in love with Edward. It's awful.

I neeeeed to watch it! Stupid full time work. I'm hoping to watch it tonight though and I really want to order my thoughts on it and make a post although from what I've heard, I might be kind of emotionally, you know, dead or something. It looks ammaaaaazziing.

Work is lame. I am very much enjoying my (probably) last year as a student.

I was doing okay, pretty much, until the last scene, which is really something. After I finished watching I sort of just stared at the screen for a while. Yeah :D

So lame (even though I kind of love my job). But yay for last year as a student! What are you studying? :)

Guuuuhh, you're making me both dread and super excited to watch the last ep. Nggghhhh.

Game of Thrones does amazing things. Between the fantasy and history/political aspects I am in heaven.

Becoming a grown-up is totally terrifying, I agree.

Totally! I'm so partial to stories that blend fantasy with politics, especially when they're done as well as Game of Thrones and especially when they let themselves get as dark and fucked up as Game of Thrones does.

And yessss in terms of being a grown-up. It is scary! I turn 21 this year and that kind of adds another layer of adulthood in the sense that I will officially be one? It's just weird.

I'm a fan of Game of Thrones, even though I feel like I'm missing a lot because I have yet to read the books. The last episode is majorly intense.

Haha I've gotten my roommates and my parents hooked on hunger games. It's really an engrossing series! Katniss is super badass. I think I can kind of relate to Lyra a little more though, because she's a more emotionally open individual. What is Violet Baudelaire from? I should read whatever series it is! Is it A Series of Unfortunate Events or something? It sounds familiar.

I haven't read the books either! I think it will be a between-season project. :) I'm so excited to see the last episode which I'm totally going to do when I get home from work today.

Lol, I'm totally getting people hooked on The Hunger Games too! I mean, it's super engrossing and Katniss is fabulous, but also it's a pretty easy read which makes it so accessible. It's pretty fantastic. Violet Baudelaire is from A Series of Unfortunate Events! She's this fantastically resourceful inventor who is continually doing awesome things. She's a great character.

I am totally in love with the new X-Men movie. I've seen it twice now and my love of Charles/Erik grows by the day. I suppose it helps that I was never an X-Men fangirl prior to this - I had only seen a couple of the previous movies and some of the cartoon series as a kid - so I was not attached to the canon they were violating, lol. Plus, the Cold War fascinates me so setting it in that era against the backdrop of the Cuban Missle Crisis was pretty much like waving a giant banner with my name on it.

Game of Thrones is also amazing, though. I'm a little annoyed that none of my friends have watched it yet because I need to flail and only have the internets to squee with. And that doesn't really work for me, seeing as GRRM is a douchewad who forbids fanfiction based on this works. The last thing I want to do is fall into a fandom where the author persecutes makers of fanworks; that sounds like the opposite of fun.

It's pretty awesome. I did like the way the film represented Charles/Erik because I mean, as someone who's a huge fan of the comic book series, they've always been that gay for each other and I feel like the movie represented that pretty well lol. On the whole, I feel like it did a good job. It was weird that they put Alex Summers (who's Cyclops little brother) in and as a character who would be significantly older than Scott in the film canon and Mystique never grew up with Charles in the way that she did in the movie. Also, in terms of canon, Mystique and Azazel totally hook up and have awesome sex and an awesome baby and I was kind of hoping we'd at least get some interaction in the film (when we got zilch). The era was pretty awesomely set though and pretty unique, so that was cool ( ... )
