I had no idea that Derek Walcott was campaigning to be made the next Professor of Poetry at Oxford! This is very cool. I haven't read any of Ruth Padel's work (she's running against him) but I intend to look her up pronto. Either way it would be cool - a guy from the Carribean or a woman - so yay! (Once I've looked Padel up I'll be able to compare

Oh, just you wait - academia is FULL of politics. After a year or so you'll begin to think that maybe you ended up at the local courthouse or embassy rather than a University :p
