so tonight that I might see #2

They were discussing the possibilities of switching roles more often during training, when Spike suddenly twisted in his chair to get a better look at the hallway. "I think he's back."

Lewis came in a moment later.

"Welcome back," Greg said warmly and waved at the free seat. "We were just discussing how much we regret sending you away."

As Lewis made his way past his colleagues, he got pats on his arm and back. "We're glad you're back," Spike said when Lewis sat down next to him. "Really glad."

"Yeah?" Lewis grinned, one corner of his mouth quirking up. "You missed me?"

Spike nodded. "Like hell."

Usually, Lewis would give a lewd response to that, giving Spike pursed lips and a kissy face, but this time he didn't. He just grinned and worked his way to the empty chair. Greg saw that the others noticed the difference, too.

"Alright, kids," Greg said, calming the room down. Ed shoved the box of donuts across the table for Lewis to open.

Lewis mouthed, "thanks" back and took one out, before passing the box along.

Greg clicked his pen and nodded at Lewis. "So, what's your take on our brothers up north?"

Lewis shrugged. "They're alright. Good team," he said, but didn't elaborate.

Everyone looked at him expectantly, asking for more.

"What? That's it. They're… a good team."

"Did anything go wrong?" Jules asked.

Before Lewis could answer, Spike said, "A lot went wrong here. That woman was crazy. She came at me!"

The others couldn't even deny that, or play it off as one of Spike's exaggerations. The other officer really had tried to take him down for a joke.

"Are they all that angry up there?" Wordy asked, and to the team's surprise, Lewis looked as if he had given something away.

"Lewis?" Greg asked, looking straight at him.

"You know how it is," Lewis said and shrugged.

Ed frowned. "We don't, actually."

"Yeah," Jules added. "We don't. What went wrong?"

"They're a bit weird up north," Lewis admitted, pressing his lips together.

"Yeah?" Spike asked.

Lewis looked up then and grinned at the others. "I'm glad I'm back. I'm not even going to complain about getting non-lethal detail for a while."

Spike snorted. "You're the only one who's cool with hanging out of a car in a high speed chase. You better not complain."

Lewis grinned at that. Greg read a lot into that and the way his posture relaxed.

Their bonding was interrupted rather suddenly. "Team One, we've got a hot call."

Everyone jumped up. Greg hung back a moment to get Lewis alone.

"You sure you're alright?" he asked. "I thought this was a good idea," he said. "If it was a mistake… I mean, you were alright?"

Lewis nodded. "It was good to… a reminder, you know. How much of a family we are."

Greg smiled. "We are. We're really happy to have you back."

They had to rush then, to catch up with the others.
