Spike was glad that Lewis was bouncing back from what his partner had originally thought of as a grave oversight. There had been no way for him to see that kid, well-hidden as he had been. Spike knew that Ed had gone to see Lewis about it afterwards - maybe that had helped. He himself had talked to Greg about the whole thing, and had gotten good advice, too.
They had been taken off the active duty roster for their burns to heal. Spike had suggested they could spend the time fixing Babycakes, especially since he knew that if Lewis worked on the robot, it would run again smoothly afterwards. Spike easily got impatient with inanimate things, because they didn't react to him like people did, but Lewis seemed to have an infinite amount of it. He looked relaxed enough already, in his faded jeans and the well-worn T-shirt.
"Ah, I hate this," Spike said when he joined Lewis in the hallway.
Lewis snorted, looking over from where he was leaning against the wall. "It's alright. Just one shift."
Spike looked at Lewis, looked at his hands and nodded. "You good?"
He'd seen the EMT cut the gloves off Lewis' hands, revealing burned and blistering skin underneath. He'd seen the way Lewis held his hands, his thin, long fingers bent like spider legs.
"I'm good. But you'll have to do the screwing."
"Don't worry, Lou, I'm good at screwing," Spike reassured him with a mocking leer and grabbed Babycakes' remote control. He joined Lewis by the far wall, careful not to put his back against the wall. Babycakes was at the end of the hallway, waiting for them to move her.
"She caught something in the cogs last time she was out." He moved her forward a bit, toward them. "You hear that? The rattling?" He moved her again, and Lewis nodded, looking closely at the moving robot. Spike brought her toward them and knelt down on the floor next to her.
By the time Kira announced Team One's return, they had repaired Babycakes. Spike was very happy with the result of their work. As Greg had told him to, he had given Lewis the chance to 'make up' for his oversight, to restore the balance, and it had worked out well. Spike scratched at his back. He couldn't wait to go down to medical to get the bandages changed. Lewis was going to have to get his changed, too, because grime had gotten all over his hands. He was more open and relaxed now than he had been in the morning.
They stowed away Babycakes and the tools they had used, and went down to the medical bay to get changed before the team returned home. By the time they were done, the team was already back.
"How's Babycakes?" Wordy asked when they came back up.
"Fixed," Lewis said, smiling.
"That's good," Ed said and slapped his back, meeting Spike's eyes. He nodded, glad they had solved the problem - both problems.
