The clock on the wall ticked loudly. The sound drowned out the hustle of the emergency room, and seemed to swallow every noise but the sound of his heartbeat, thudding dully in his ears. It seemed like eternity, sitting in the uncomfortable chair, trying to ignore the pitying stares. Everyone talked in hushed tones, gurneys rattled past, and the clock on the wall ticked again.
Every time the door to the operating room swung open, it was like a vacuum sucking all noise and movement from the room, freezing Team One in place. The nurse or doctor would only pause to cast a sorrowful look at the group before scurrying off in one direction or another. The clock on the wall ticked again, and the low conversations resumed. No one wanted to ask, and no one was certain if they wanted to hear the answer.
The door to the operating room swung open, and the vacuum sucked all the air out of the room. The doctor walked slowly to the group, shook her head slightly. There was suddenly no more reason to listen to the clock on the wall.
