At Seven Thirty on December 18th the snow was already blowing outside and it was below zero weather outside. This however, didn’t stop Clark Lane as he ran down the stairs, carrying his snowboard that he kept up in his room, jumping the last two steps, he turned left and started walking towards the closet to get his boots.
“Clark, you’re not thinking about going outside are you?” Clark’s mother Sophie asked him as she approached him. “It’s minus ten and when did you get permission to us your new snowboard?” Sophie questioned her fourteen year old son who in some ways was actually like her husband.
“Mom, it’s not that cold outside.” Clark’s voice had slight attitude in it as he rolled his eyes just as his cell phone started buzzing in his pocket.
“Don’t even think about touching that cell phone,” Sophie warned her son as she put her hand out, “Give me your cell phone Clark and go upstairs to your room but be quiet your fathers still sleeping.”
Clark reluctantly handed his mother his cell phone and turned to walk back upstairs to his room leaving his new snowboard leaning against the staircase.
Around two and a half hours later Ed Lane walked sleepily into his kitchen wearing a pair of sweat pants and an old Police sweatshirt. His team had just gotten off a long triple shift only six hours ago and he was still exhausted as he made his way into the kitchen and smiled lightly at his wife of fifteen years.
“Morning Soph,” he grumbled a barely audible greeting.
“Eddie, you’re tired, you should be sleeping,” Sophie told her husband as she gave him a worried look. She knew he didn’t like to talk about what he saw on his job and he’d be more likely to talk to Wordy or Greg but she wished sometimes that he’d tell her a little bit about what was going on. “Are you sure you don’t want to talk about it?” She asked gently.
“No Soph, I’m fine,” Ed told her then, quickly changing the subject, he asked “Where’s Clark?”
“Clark’s-“ Sophie began just as Clark walked into the kitchen “Clark’s right here,” Sophie finished smiling, “What’s up?”
“I was wondering if I could play with the Wii?” Clark asked his mother. Usually he didn’t have to ask those kinds of questions, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be allowed to since he was pretty sure he was grounded.
“Have you realized anything?” Sophie asked.
“I know I shouldn’t take my Christmas presents without asking and want to go snowboarding in freezing weather.” Clark told her.
“Yeah you shouldn’t,” Sophie told him as she stood up and picked up his cell phone off the counter “You’re very popular you know. This phone hasn’t stopped buzzing,” Sophie commented as she handed her son his cell phone back.
“Thanks Mom,” Clark smiled as he put his phone in his pocket, “So, can I use the Wii?” He asked.
“Yeah, I guess. I don’t see why not,” Sophie answered him as Clark smiled.
“Thanks Mom,” he answered again then he noticed his father sitting at the kitchen table “Dad, you wanna play?” He asked.
“Sure,” Ed slowly stood up. “Playing a few games might wake me up a little,” he answered. “What do you want to play?” He asked his son as he followed him into the living room where the Wii was set up.
“Doesn’t matter to me,” Clark answered as he plopped down on the couch and begin texting his friends back.
“Texting your girlfriend Lois again?” Ed joked.
“Dad,” Clark sighed and shook his head, “I wish Spike and Sam were here to defend me,” he mumbled again.
“Well, they will be here on Saturday when everybody’s coming over for the Holidays party but Spike’s going to be too busy playing with the Wii and eating and Sam, well, he’ll be too busy with a certain person…” Ed trailed off.
Clark knew exactly what his father was talking about but he chose not to let him know, “Sam has a girlfriend?” He asked, “Is she really hot?” He began questioning but stopped when his father sent him a look. “Sorry,” His voice got a little quieter, “Maybe Jules will help me or will she be with Leah?” Clark wondered. “What’s Leah like anyways?” Not much had been said about the newest member of his father’s team.
“Leah’s nice, she works hard and she’s a great team member and that’s all you need to know, so are we going to play a game or what?” Ed asked.
“Yeah,” Clark stood up, “Are Wordy’s daughter’s coming to the party?” He asked a slight whine in his voice. Wordy’s three young daughters loved bugging him and trying to play dress up with him.
“Yeah,” Ed answered, “but I’m pretty sure only one of them still wants to give you a make-over the other two probably will just spend the entire time bugging you.”
“Great,” Clark sighed again as he found a Wii game that both he and his father loved “Well as long as we’re snowed in…”
