Rapid Palatial Expander! That soiunds science fiction-y! Is that one of those orthodontic things where you have to crank it open with a little key? OUCH!

LeGuin? I'd start with A Wizard of Earthsea. The snide comments about females and wizardry are there for a reason, she's going somewhere with it over the course of the four books. I don't LOVE The Left Hand of Darkness, but it is a good book and a classic for a reason.

yeah, we have to crank it open a notch every night for like six months. soph's a trooper though - she got my mother's pain tolerance i think, luckily for her.

I'm glad she's got the tolerance because those things suck. I think I *still* haven't forgiven my mother (or my orthodontist)!!

My favorite LeGuins are The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness. For some reason I could never get into the Earthsea books at all.
