Automatic video scene splitting?

I've noticed that when I capture or open a DV-AVI in Windows Movie Maker, it can automatically detect the different scenes in the video, presumably using the DV timestamp information. Is there any way to use something like Windows Movie Maker or VirtualDub to automatically split the detected scenes in a video into several files ( Read more... )

This was one of the things that drew me to a complete linux switchover 6 years ago. Scripting stuff is easier in linux, cause most of it is command line based. I couldn't find a windows utility to do what you want, and used dvgrab on linux:
dvgrab --autosplit --timestamp --format dv2 file_name_prefix
