You know what rocks more than a weekend backpacking trip?

Backpacking on Sunday night. NOBODY is around!

It's only an hour's drive from my house to Butano State Park on the San Mateo Coast. I hiked 5.5 miles up to the park's trail camp yesterday and had the whole ridgetop to myself. It was perfect. The fog muffled all the woodland noises... ( Read more... )

Arg! My camera broke in Norway... I need to get a repair (or replacement!) I guess once it's dropped too many times, it tends to get a little screwy...

I saw many animals... and all of them were banana slugs! Oh, and one Stellar's jay.

I heard a couple of owls while I was hiking... and at campsite #8, supposedly there is an owl nest in the cathedral redwood... but I didn't see/hear anything overnight.

I have yet to *see* an owl in the wild - so I'm jealous of your Tunitas experience!

I've been meaning to hit Butano. Maybe next summer?

Ah...sounds like my kind of trip! Maybe someday I'll get a chance to check this place out and just disappear for awhile...

I have to say... it's a nice little getaway for a single night... and not too far a drive for most of the Bay Area. As for my own dreams of "disappearing for a while," close to home, I still need to experience the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail and the Ohlone Wilderness Trail.

Of course, what I *really* need to do is stop working so much on the weekends...! :)

PS You should also think about overnighting in Point Reyes - that's a nice place to check out. Beach campfires allowed and if you hit it mid-week, you can have a hike-in beach site to yourself!
