Oh, and here I thought that the Met show was a sign of a new daring in Chinese art historians to challenge the orthodox view of Yuan dynasty art as unrefined and vulgar. (which view can be still be found in the comments on the mural in Asia section).

And you're so right, the Republic was like the Taisho, but without with sense of being a peaceful interlude. And stories set during the period always felt curiously bracketed and the conclusion forgone -- eventually everyone either died or become Communist or left China.

Oh, I have been reading about the character of Shisan Yan, the opera master. Apparently he was actually a fictional character loses modeled on one of the most famous singers at the time, and the challenge with Mei Lan fang was apparently a ploy staged by Mei Lanfang's manager -- at the time the singer was already in retirement. And when Mei Lanfang learned of it he apologize profusely.
