Left ear the day i got my cartilage done. (the purple marker is still there, too)

and now my question:
two years ago, i got my cartilage gunned at the mall. three months later, it got infected and i had to let it close. two weeks ago, i got it re-pierced, but i did it at a piercer. i'm pretty sure he gauged it (like 14-ish, as opposed to the smaller stud i got at the mall). but the question is, should it still be really painful? i can barely move it to clean it, and whenever it gets hit, i want to scream. according to my anatomy textbook, cartilage takes awhile to heal...but how long does it usually take?
sorry if i sound like a naive idiot...when it comes to piercing, i definately am.
