This morning, after a fucking horrific 3 hours on public transport that is completely unreliable [I was in Geelong] I went to the second hand book fair at Trades Hall. So so good. It is still open tomorrow; I suggest any Melbournians to go. I got:

Ignacio Ramonet Wars of the 21st Century : New Threats New Fears [$2]
Jenefer Shute Life ( Read more... )

A lot of the books at that sale were the left-overs from our sale a few weeks ago.

I remember when I was a kid, furtive reads of both The Joy of Sex and Everywoman by Derek Llewellyn-Jones (which I now have my own copy of, thanks to our sale) were instrumental to a very early sexual education. A lot of people could do with owning copies of both books now, let alone in their early teens.

What sale was that?

I first heard of The Joy of Sex from Sheila Jeffreys as she criticised it in sex politics, at uni. It isn't as bad as it was depicted- she deliberately took segments like "this will appeal to his male rape fantasies" or something similar to that, rather than a lot of the good stuff in it.

I will have to have a look at Everywoman ;)

Everywoman is a great book, however there seem to be a lot of fairly nit-picky feminist critiques of it, partly of the 'this still promotes the patriarchal ideal' sense, and partly 'it doesn't go far enough'. It was revised in the mid-nineties, I think, with many of the very 70s (when the book was first released) idioms changed to better reflect the times.

The sale was about a month ago now - it was called something like the Tsunami Benefit Sale, and we had a lot of books donated by the academics, so there was some great stuff there. I also picked up a copy of Llewellyn-Jones' Everyman (not as good as Everywoman, unfortunately) for $5, and a copy of Atlas Shrugged for $2 :)
