so, the more you learn about american history at the college level, the more it would appear that we suck royally as a global governing superpower. not that i've taken any actual american history classes per se, but the things we're tangentially learning about the us while studying the modern middle east (and it's a lot more than it should be, if ( Read more... )

You just didn't pay enough attention in High School I feel.

Nothing in that entire history of the US's actions in the middle east is new... all of it I learned years back (yes, in school). I am actually very surprised you didn't.

i'm 99% sure we never learned up this. mr. laine briefly touched on some of what we did in s. america in ap us history, but i'm fairly positive that we never learned about the arab world.

if i didn't pay attention and was able to just completely miss out on this, i should've been held accountable. and considering i read the paper every day & all that jazz and that i got an a in every single history class as far back as i can imagine, i feel like i wasn't simply being apathetic.

Well, I can say nothing about Mr. Laine, but DeRose and Routhier both taught this. Or at least talked about it with me, either inside of or outside of class.

Maybe you should just start caring about countries other than america, you imperialist capitalist pig.

well, never had routhier and derose i had for american history segment one that didn't go into the right era. we left off with fences in the west, or something of that nature. it is a comfort to hear that our teachers at least knew about this, even if they didn't discuss it in class, although i don't know how much good that does the average student.

i know i learned all this somewhere. maybe not school necessarily, or at least a specific class, but somewhere during high school (because i know it's not of my own accord as i'm completely apathetic towards stuff like this).

i definitely remember mr. laine covering this stuff, but you're right that it was cursory; we talked about manifest destiny or william jennings bryan or some other wild west business a lot more. which is undoubtedly sweet, but it always left us scrambling to get to the recent scandals.

were you in AP? i got this from normal american history...

yeah, i did ap. but then again, so did kai, so where did she learn it from? plus, david claims to have known it for years, also from school.

and in any case, don't you think like this should be a stressed part of history, rather than something tucked in your junior year of high school.

furthermore, things like the creation of israel are so contentious that i'm sure i would've remembered talking about it in school. the version that i'm learning now is considerably different that what i cobbled together from newspapers and the jcc, which i suppose is not very shocking, and which i could've anticipated since the first time i was in europe.

this has little to do with your post....but if Corina and I got together to work on economics of poverty, would you like to join our study group?
