Yes, that's true. It's exhausting but it is fun. I got to write with chalk on a blackboard again after more than two years :-)

I was lucky and had some days off during the week, but I remember wondering how on earth the stores stayed in business when they were never open when people could actually get to them. They closed at 6PM on weekdays, and were only open from 9 to 1 on Saturdays, and not at all on Sundays.

Ok, that was some time ago. I still try to convince myself that it was not that long ago. But shop-opening hours have changed a bit since then. Shops are still not open on Sundays, though there are exceptions, but they are allowed to open until 8pm for the rest of the week (I only wish they would actually do it! especially on Saturdays).
I'll stop whining now, I promise ...

The explanation for the shop opening hours is far easier I think. The area where I live has an unemployment rate of over 20% (welcome to the former GDR). So people either don't have any money at all to spend on furniture, or there is at least someone at home in the household who can take care of the day-to-day stuff so that Saturday morning is sufficient to get the bigger things done.
But shop-opening hours where much worse in Germany. The situation has improved significantly. Shops used to close at 2pm on Saturdays at the latest ...
