Stupid

It's official: I am stupid. Yes. Incredibly stupid. That's the only way that might explain why I agreed to take over a lecture at university for the upcoming semester. It's not that I am bored or something. Or have too much free time. I should have known that holding a lecture involves lots of preparation. And, of course, stupid me threw out all ( Read more... )

And you *never* know what is good for something else in the long run

Yes, that's true. It's exhausting but it is fun. I got to write with chalk on a blackboard again after more than two years :-)

Congratulations on the editing project. It's a pity that there was no money involved, but hey, it's a start :-)

Congratulations on your cozy new rug, even if it took an expedition to get it. When I lived in Berlin everything closed at 1:00 on Saturdays. I could never figure out how anyone got any shopping done at all.

Thanks. Going to Berlin is not that much of an expedition. By car on a Saturday morning it's maybe a 1.15h drive. Not much longer than the expedition it takes me to get to work each day and boy was that an expedition today *grumbles ( ... )

When I lived in Berlin there were still two of them!

I was lucky and had some days off during the week, but I remember wondering how on earth the stores stayed in business when they were never open when people could actually get to them. They closed at 6PM on weekdays, and were only open from 9 to 1 on Saturdays, and not at all on Sundays.

Ok, that was some time ago. I still try to convince myself that it was not that long ago. But shop-opening hours have changed a bit since then. Shops are still not open on Sundays, though there are exceptions, but they are allowed to open until 8pm for the rest of the week (I only wish they would actually do it! especially on Saturdays).

I'll stop whining now, I promise ...

Oh, a nice new carpet sounds good. I really would like one for my living room too, to go with the new sofa, but I don't quite trust that the pup is not going to have accidents yet. :/ I can't imagine stores being closed that early, though, either! Maybe most people have their rugs delivered?

Yes, the new carpet is nice. I hope I'll find the time to post some pictures in the near future. We completely rearranged our living room, which turned out to be a splendid idea. The room is rather small and the doors are located at impossible places *hates architect* which made it really hard to fit the sofas in. In the end, we moved almost everything to a different place (except the old and heavy cupboard) and it was well worth the effort :-)

The explanation for the shop opening hours is far easier I think. The area where I live has an unemployment rate of over 20% (welcome to the former GDR). So people either don't have any money at all to spend on furniture, or there is at least someone at home in the household who can take care of the day-to-day stuff so that Saturday morning is sufficient to get the bigger things done.

But shop-opening hours where much worse in Germany. The situation has improved significantly. Shops used to close at 2pm on Saturdays at the latest ...
