crackfics.
The broken shoelace should have been his first clue that today was not going to be a good day.
It had happened while Hiyoshi was changing after morning practice. Then, on his way to his first class he'd been cornered by four eager female upperclassmen wanting to coo over him and thus was delayed, causing him to arrive late to his first class - which had resulted in his bear of a teacher ordering him to report back after classes for his punishment. This, in turn, made him late to afternoon practice, and Atobe's displeasure took the form of twenty laps, raised to fifty when Hiyoshi attempted to give his snippy captain an excuse.
By the time he'd finished the laps Sakaki had shown up, shuffling all the regulars into pairs for impromptu doubles matches. Hiyoshi was paired with Mukahi, their opponents Oshitari and Shishido. Mukahi alternated between loudly complaining about how unfair it was that his partner was the only on unaccustomed to doubles and boasting that he would defeat his partner-in-everything-including-tennis.
They'd lost 3-6.
Hiyoshi had hoped to return to the locker room unnoticed and leave school without a word to anyone, but as he passed by the next court - where Atobe and Jiroh had thoroughly beaten Ohtori and Kabaji - he noticed two spectators in Saigaku jerseys.
The first was Atobe's rival, Tezuka. The second, standing a few yards further down the court, was Seigaku's bratty first year, Echizen. No doubt Atobe had invited Tezuka with the intent of showing off his prowess, and the runt had tagged along.
Deciding to ignore the visitors, Hiyoshi continued on behind them. Tezuka took no notice of him, as Atobe was monopolizing his attention - though the Seigaku captain appeared unimpressed.
"So you're not any good at doubles either, huh?"
The first year wasn't facing him, but Hiyoshi knew who the question had been posed to. Stopping short he growled, "What was that?"
Echizen turned, a defiant look on his upturned face. "You heard me."
His fingers curled into fists, but Hiyoshi refrained from any other reaction. Instead, he continued walking.
"Heh~. Running away?" Echizen goaded.
Turning smartly on his heel, Hiyoshi shot back, "You're not worth my time!" There was nothing to gain from someone underneath him, no gekokujou to be had.
Smirking the younger boy replied, "Shouldn't it be the other way around? I beat you, afterall."
Hiyoshi felt his restraint break, like the sharp snap of a tree branch. "How dare you speak to an unpperclassman that way, you impertinant little--"
"Hiyoshi! Do you need more laps?" Atobe interrupted at the same moment Tezuka shouted, "Echizen! Thirty laps!" Both boys turned to stare at their respective captains. Atobe, not to be outdone by a rival, stood just a bit straighter and added, "Yes, the same for you, Hiyoshi."
Out of the corner of his eye Hiyoshi saw the brat pull his cap down just a bit as he mumbled a "che." Ignoring him, Hiyoshi took a slow breath and began running.
In this, at least, he was determined to come out triumphant today.

Wow is Echizen a brat here. >.> He comes off as a little snot. If I was Hiyoshi (and I thank God I'm NOT) I woulda smacked him. And then run my laps.
