Well, if you're looking for local camping sites, I definitely recommend Big Sur. It's a gorgeous mix of redwood forests, mountains, rocky cliffs and azul ocean coastlines. The state park there is my absolute favorite place to camp in California, and Point Lobos Preserve (very close by) is a great place to explore.
However...if you wanna be a little more adventurous, I may be in Colorado by July. You know, that state with the big Rocky Mountains...I'm sure there's tons of places to camp, with the added benefit of me! :) Ok, so this is probably a long shot, but I figure if I bug people long enough, someone is sure to come out to see me.
I'll second the recommendation of Big Sur! The best vacation I have had, probably, was taking a few days driving down Hwy 1, picking berries and playing at the boardwalk, seeing the 17-mile drive in Carmel, being out there alone with the seals, etc.
By Yosemite is a lesser-known park, Sequoia national park, and that is a nice one, too. There's a string of lakes along a long trail, and the further up you go to the higher and higher lakes, the fewer people there are, so that you can customize your seclusion level by how long you hike. Good trout fishing in the lakes, if you're into eating fish. Yosemite is gorgeous, of course, and I would love to go back again and again. I think you have to make reservations and it is often more crowded.
