It was because he was a gardener.
He always worked in his garden. He worked there when they moved to Africa, he worked there when him and his wife were fighting. He always worked in the garden. He was a gardener. It didn't have anything to do with the plot.

I uderstand the gardening part but was there any significance of the garden. was it symbolic of something?
