“Well, Ms. Wilson,” Quinn said cheerfully as she took the otoscope out of the small boys ear and turned toward his nervous mother, “he’s definitely just got an ear infection, nothing to worry about. I’ll just write him a prescription and you guys can be on your way.”
“A-Are you sure?” The woman said nervously, biting at her nail anxiously. “I mean, he’s had a fever now for three days, are you sure it’s not something more serious?”
Quinn kept her smile on and nodded as she started to scrawl out a medication onto her prescription pad. “Yeah, a fever of 99.2, that’s perfectly fine, I promise.”
“What about a ruptured eardrum? Or a, oh what was it now, a respiratory sync…syncytial virus? Or-“
“It’s an ear infection, very minor, here.” Quinn loved pediatrics…the worried parents who thought they had a PhD from going on webmd.com, not as much. She shoved the prescription into the mother’s hand and turned to the slightly pale child on her table. “You’re going to drink this medicine twice a day for the next few days and then you’ll feel all better, ok?” she said sweetly. The boy nodded weakly. “Awesome, and if you don’t you’ll come right back here, sound like a plan little dude?” Quinn raised her hand up for a high five. The boy smiled and slapped her hand happily. Quinn laughed and picked up the child, handing him off to his mother who was reading Quinn’s prescription thoroughly, as if she had just prescribed her child medical marijuana. Quinn rolled her eyes as the door shut and plopped herself down on the rolling stool in her office.
As she reclined and looked up at the ceiling, waiting for her next patient to come in, Quinn heard her phone starting to buzz. She reached for it and stared blankly at the screen, which was showing an unfamiliar number. She debated answering it or not, she preferred not to take calls when she was working, but curiosity got the best of her and clicked the answer button.
“Dr. Fabray,” she said calmly into the phone.
“O-oh, hi Quinn, it’s uh…Rachel…Berry,” the other voice said softly. Quinn’s eyes widened and a small smile crept onto her face.
“Rachel, hi!”
“Hi, are you busy?”
“Uhh…” Quinn quickly sprung up and opened the door of her office, peeking down the hall to see if any nurses were headed her way with a sick child in tow. “No, I have a few minutes,” she replied, happy that today was slow.
“Great. So it was really nice seeing you on Saturday, and I’d love to catch up some more, so I was wondering if you’d maybe like to have dinner tonight?” Rachel asked hopefully into the phone. On her side of the call, Rachel was nervously pacing through her office backstage at the theater she was working at. She kept glancing in the mirror adorned on her wall, constantly checking her appearance as if Quinn could see her though the phone.
Quinn broke into a grin. “Yeah, that sounds great, I’m free tonight. A woman I work with told me about this Italian place over on Madison, it’s supposed to be great, do you want me to make a reservation?”
There was a slight pause. Quinn swallowed nervously, hoping Rachel wasn’t having second thoughts. “That sounds great and all, but I have Mia and no sitter, I was hoping maybe you’d like to come in and I could cook…” Quinn’s eyes clenched shut; she totally forgot about the energetic child she had met just a few days ago.
“Of course, of course, I forgot about Mia, my apologizes, dinner at your place sounds lovely.”
She heard Rachel sigh with relief. “Please don’t apologize, most women wouldn’t even be willing to date a single mom, nonetheless come to her place for dinner,” she said sadly. Quinn winced; Mia shouldn’t be a plight in Rachel’s personal life, it seemed so wrong, especially since Mia seemed so lovable. Just then, there was a knock at the door and a nurse popped her head inside.
“The McDonald’s are here with their daughter, she’s been throwing up all morning.”
“Shit. Rachel, I have a patient but dinner sounds fantastic. I don’t have allergies or anything so whatever you make I’m sure I’ll love, just text me your address, ok?”
“Great, I’ll see you later!” With a click, the call ended…just in time for little Anne McDonald to walk into the doctor’s office and promptly throw up on the floor.
Terrific.

As the janitor mopped up Anne’s vomit, Quinn got a chance to peek at the text from Rachel, telling her to stop by around 8. She finished up with her patients as quickly as possible and sprinted, literally, to her loft a few blocks away for a shower. After a quick wash and a change into fresh clothing, Quinn hailed a cab and headed off towards Rachel’s house, the clock already hitting 8.
When she got to the building, she paid the cabbie and went to the door to ring the buzzer. After a minute of no response, Quinn hit he buzzer again and sighed. When another minute passed, Quinn bit her lip. What if Rachel was in the shower, or what if she was cooking something that was burning; Quinn didn’t want to come off as pushy…but it was cold out! Just as she went to hit the buzzer a third time, she felt her phone buzzing in her pocket and saw Rachel’s name on screen.
“Hello?”
“Quinn! Oh, please tell me you’re not at my place yet!”
“Uhh, yeah I am, where are you?”
“Shit. I’m so sorry, I’m a block away, just hang tight, I’m really really sorry!”
Quinn smiled lightly. “No, don’t worry about it, I’m fine, take your time.” She heard Rachel continuing to utter curses under her breath as the call ended. Quinn chuckled to herself. A few minutes later, the blonde looked up to see Rachel holding Mia, jogging briskly down the street. Quinn beamed and waved, receiving a nod from Rachel who slowed down at seeing Quinn’s face, noting that she wasn’t furious at her own lateness.
“Hi, I can’t apologize enough,” Rachel said breathlessly as she placed Mia down gently on the floor. “I-“
“Hi!” Both adults quirked at the sound and looked down to find Mia, who was looking expectantly up at Quinn with a big toothy smile. Quinn couldn’t help but laugh.
“Mia, I’ve told you it’s rude to interrupt people when they’re talking,” Rachel said with an exasperated sigh. In Rachel’s head, she was already skating on thin ice with Quinn, she’d hate to lose another date from her child. She quickly unlocked the front door to the apartment and let the other two inside.
“No, it’s rude not to say hello to people,” Mia said thoughtfully. Quinn’s eyebrows raised as she smirked.
“Girl’s got a point. Hello Mia, it’s nice to see you again,” Quinn said happily and extended her hand to the child. Mia couldn’t smile any bigger if she tried as she took Quinn’s hand.
“A pleasure for always.”
Rachel giggled and pressed the elevator button, then bent down to scoop up the little brunette. “A pleasure as always, silly. Have I taught you nothing?” the mother giggled. Mia smiled, stuck her tongue out and shook her head. Quinn giggled. “You little smart-alec,” Rachel sighed and kissed her daughter on the top of her head. They waited as the elevator took up them up to the fourth floor, then walked down a short hallway to Rachel’s door. “As I was saying, I got held up at work, one of our actors had a diva-fit the likes of which even I haven’t seen before,” Rachel scowled.
Quinn scoffed. “Wow, that must dwarf World War III if it impressed you.” Rachel chuckled as she opened the door.
“Mi, why don’t you go read in your room while I make dinner, ok?” Mia nodded and scurried off to her bedroom. “So yeah, this actor just blew up, I spent most of my day dealing with that. I popped out for an hour to pick Mi up from school, came back just hoping it would be solved, but no, he locked himself in his dressing room!” Quinn’s eyes widened at the thought of a professional actor behaving so immaturely. Rachel nodded at Quinn’s expression as she took out a large pot from a cabinet and filled it with water. “Then, of course, Mia was in my office, well, was supposed to be, but wandered off, gone ‘exploring’ as she calls it!”
“She’s independent, isn’t she,” Quinn mused as she looked around Rachel’s apartment. It wasn’t small, rather it was cozy, and looked very lived in and comforting. She had big windows looking out on the city, though they weren’t high up enough for a particularly special view. It was relatively neat, especially considering that a child lived there. A stack of Scooby-Doo DVDs were piled next to the TV set and there were drawings in marker and crayon taped to the fridge, and for some reason, several walls.
“Very, she likes to be older than she is. I always say, she think she’s five going on thirty.” Quinn chuckled and looked at a drawing of two figures, one big, one small, with an arrow pointing to the bigger one reading “MoMMy” and the other saying “MIa.” Quinn smiled. Rachel glanced up from the pot on the stove and followed Quinn’s eyesight. “She’s artistic too, she draws more than she sleeps. And when she writes, she refuses to write lower case m’s.”
Quinn nodded. “I can see that, it’s like a little museum in here!” When there was no response, Quinn looked over to see Rachel standing on her tippy-toes, grunting softly as she tried to reach a box of pasta on the top-most shelf. Quinn snickered and walked over. She placed her hand gently on the curve of Rachel’s lower back to signal her to stop reaching and she herself reached up and took the box down. Rachel smiled and turned around, suddenly in very close proximity to the blonde.
“Thanks,” Rachel said softly, looking up into Quinn’s eyes.
The blonde grinned flirtatiously. “No problem.” There was thick silence before Quinn leaned in and kissed Rachel softly. Their lips pressed together gently, with each leaning in to the soft touch. Quinn’s hand, which had still been on the singer’s back, slid to her waist, and she quickly put the pasta on the counter to hold her with both hands. The kissing grew more passionate as Rachel’s tongue slid across Quinn’s lips. They were lost in feelings that only when they heard a loud clatter did they immediately pull apart to see Mia, who was blushing profusely, holding an apple, next to a metal bowl and a pile of fruit that was now on the floor.
“Sorry, I didn’t wanna interrupt grown-up kissing time,” Mia said quickly before running off to her room, thoroughly embarrassed.
The two adults stood still, Rachel’s head tucked under Quinn’s chin with her own embarrassment. They stood in silence, but unbeknownst to Rachel, Quinn was smiling, on the verge of laughter. “You can leave if you want, I’d understand,” Rachel said softly.
Quinn pulled back almost instantly and looked down at Rachel, seeing that there were tears in her eyes. “Why would I leave?”
Rachel gestured weakly in the direction Mia had run off from. “Be real, Quinn. I have a five year old, no one’s lining up to date someone with a kid. I mean look at us, we can’t go out to dinner, we need to watch our language, we can’t even kiss without it becoming an issue.”
Quinn just smiled warmly down at Rachel, who was on the brink of an anxiety attack. “Who said any of that bothers me?” Rachel looked at the blonde curiously. “Rachel, I love children. I love them. I spend my day, every day, making them feel better because I want there to be only healthy children in the world. I don’t need to go out for meals, I don’t curse like a sailor and I’m fine with waiting to kiss you again. Mia’s adorable, and I’d really like to get to know you and her together.” Rachel was in shock. “I take it you don’t get this very often.”
Rachel’s shocked face broke into an overjoyed and relieved smile. “Never, actually,” she said with a weak laugh. Quinn glanced back towards Mia’s room before planting another firm kiss to Rachel’s lips.
“Well, I’d like to stick around, if it’s all the same to you.” Rachel just beamed and nodded eagerly. Quinn smiled. “Excellent. Now, the waters boiling so I suggest we get cooking.”
**
While Rachel cooked for the next forty minutes or so, the two women spoke at length, catching up on their respective college experiences and what they were up to now. It was nice to get the pleasantries out of the way. “Mi, dinner’s just bout on the table!” Rachel shouted down the hall. She looked over at Quinn, who was smiling and humming to herself as she finished filling the glasses with water. Rachel watched curiously as Mia poked her head out of her door, took a few steps towards them, stopped, went on her tip-toes looking down at the hall at them curiously, before taking another few steps and repeating the process. “Mia, honey, can I ask what you’re doing?”
“I-Is Quinn still here?” She asked softly as she approached the kitchen.
Rachel looked over at Quinn before turning back to her daughter and nodding. “Yeah…why?”
“Do you want me to not come in?”
“…why?”
Mia rolled her eyes like it was obvious. “I thought you wanted a grown-up dinner.” Rachel cocked her head. “Doesn’t kissing happen with dinner for grown-ups?” Rachel broke into a deep grin.
“Sweety, are you asking if I’m on a date with Quinn?” At this point Quinn took her seat so Rachel could handle her daughter as she saw fit. Mia nodded as she walked into the kitchen and looked into the dining room to see Quinn setting a napkin on her lap. “Well, it just so happens that I am having a ‘grown-up dinner’, if that’s what you call it,” Rachel said with a laugh and picked up the small girl, “But we’re having our dinner here because we want you to join us.” Rachel carried the beaming child over to the table and set her in the chair at the head of the table, then took her own seat across from Quinn.
“So Quinn,” Mia said quickly. Both adults looked at the child curiously, shocked that she was jumping so easily into conversation. “What’s your favorite animal?” Quinn snorted. Icebreaking conversation starters for children.
Rachel looked almost apologetically at the blonde, who was smiling. “I really like walruses actually. What about you?”
“I like sea turtles and penguins!” she replied with conviction. Quinn nodded thoughtfully.
“Very cool, you have good taste. And what’s your favorite color?” Mia’s eyes were shining, she felt important that she was involved in dinner conversation.
“It’s a tie, pink and blue.”
“Me too!” Quinn said enthusiastically. Mia squeaked with excitement.
Rachel watched her daughter, normally shy around adults, especially people who she knew her mother was dating, bring up talking point after talking point in between bites of pasta. Rachel barely got a word in edgewise and frankly she didn’t care. She’d never met someone interested in knowing Mia, nevertheless actually engaging her in conversation.
**
Before Rachel knew it the meal was over. “Mia, it’s just about your bed-time, can you get into pajamas and I’ll be in to tuck you in in five minutes?” Rachel asked as she cleared dishes with Quinn’s help.
“Ok, mommy.” The little girl walked over to Quinn, who was washing a dish in the sink, and tugged loosely at her shirt. The blonde looked down at the child. “Good night Quinn, I hope you had a nice evening!” Quinn beamed and kneeled down.
“Good night, Mia. And yes, I had a lovely time, you’re a very interesting young lady!” Mia smiled and almost instantly wrapped her arms around Quinn’s neck in a strong hug. Quinn laughed lightly and hugged the child back.
“Good night,” Mia said again and walked off down the hallway.
“Wow, she’s not usually affectionate with people she doesn’t know,” Rachel said with shock, putting the last of the dishes in the sink.
“Most kids are. You really need to get to know them and ask them questions so they can warm up to you. And besides, she’s so sweet!” Rachel nodded and grinned from ear to ear.
“Thank you.” Quinn looked at Rachel curiously. “Really, thank you. I was late coming here, we just had some pasta and tomato sauce, she busted us kissing and we didn’t even get to talk to each other over dinner, yet you’re still here with a smile on…. You’re great.” Quinn took the opportunity to lean in to Rachel’s nervous mouth and kissed it softly, like before.
After a few minutes of gentle kissing, Rachel pulled back, earning a weak groan from Quinn. “Let me just go tuck her in and we can move this to the couch.” Quinn nodded hungrily and watched in a daze as Rachel walked towards her daughter’s room, her hips swaying with each step.
Ten minutes later, Quinn was sitting on the couch reading the back of one of Mia’s Scooby-Doo DVDs when Rachel came back in. “She’s down and out like a light,” she said with a mischievous grin. Quinn returned the expression and tossed the DVD on the coffee table before Rachel got on top of her and started kissing her heatedly. Quinn quickly took command and pushed Rachel down into the couch as she got on top. Their tongues fought roughly, passion spilling out freely as hands wandered over clothed skin.
Quinn wriggled one hand under Rachel’s shirt and cupped her breast, cupping it softly and running her thumb over Rachel’s nipple. The singer moaned gently into her mouth and pressed her chest forward eagerly. Quinn smirked an tugged the bra down, then moved her hand to hold the now bare breast. She toyed with Rachel’s nipple, tugging at it gently, running her fingers over it lazily, gliding her palm over it, loving the feeling of the little bud hardening under her touch. She quickly repeated the actions with the other breast, teasing it to a peak, as Rachel mewled softly and started thrusting her hips forward, pressing her core against Quinn’s thigh.
Quinn was so turned on, she didn’t even realize that they were dry-humping like a couple of horny teenagers, just looking for something to rub up against. She herself began humping Rachel’s thigh that was between her own, and though she knew it wasn’t nearly enough to cum, she enjoying feeling Rachel’s strong thigh under her sex. Rachel, on the other hand, hadn’t had sex in almost a year, and at the feeling of a particularly tough tug to her nipple, mewled out loudly and grabbed Quinn’s back and pressed her sex forward hard.
“I-I’m close,” she whimpered out. Quinn grinned and started grinding her thigh hard into Rachel’s pussy, letting Rachel hump her to her heart’s desire. She used both hands to tug again at the singer’s chest, and gasped when she felt the smaller woman start to shake and whimper breathlessly while holding the blonde as close as she could. There was silence, with the only sound coming from Rachel’s lips; weak, breathy pants.
“That was so hot,” Quinn husked softly, jerking her knew forward slightly and reveling in the sharp inhale from Rachel.
“I was so horny, it’s been a while.” Quinn kissed Rachel’s lips quickly and nodded.
“I had a great time tonight,” she whispered softly. Rachel beamed and nodded. “And I’d like to do this again soon. But I think I should leave now though, because all I want to do is take you into your bedroom and make you make those sounds again, and I’d really like to get to know you more first.” Rachel chuckled and started to sit up. Quinn kissed her one more time before getting up and straightening out her clothes.
Rachel got shakily to her feet and took out Quinn’s coat from the closet, then handed it to the blonde. “Thanks,” she said kindly and threw on the black jacket. Rachel nodded and walked her to the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow, ok?”
“Sounds great. Good night.” Rachel said sleepily.
“Night.” With one last smile, Quinn turned down the hallway and walked towards the elevators. Rachel closed the door, and instantly upon hearing the lock click, broke into a tremendous, all-encompassing grin.
