Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. On a related perhaps even geekier note: one of the niggling little things that bugs me about GNOME and KDE is the default to display bright, chunky icons on common buttons (OK, Cancel, etc.) assuming it will help differentiate one from the other. Because we see words as symbols, the icons are redundant clutter.

I tried Xfce for a few months on an old Dell Dimension 3000 in the office. It's very ugly and nasty to work around, and I can't say I really noticed any significant performance benefits vs GNOME.
If you're comfortable in the command line, I'd definitely recomment Fluxbox over Xfce. Haven't tried any others, though.
