Since I've been hearing about the hilarity on this one all week from the Nasa side, let me pass on that they're having a field day with all the press that have been calling about the "new evidence of life on mars" since the project group cited won't fly for at least another 5 years, and that this is evidence supporting throwing money at going looking for evidence that might point to signs of life... the degrees of separation are impressive.
I agree. We can always keep these microbes alive in an artificial, Mars-like environment. No need to make them extinct. However, I would hate to see humanity denied proper access to an entire planet for the sake of a few alien microbes.
