Question for you clothing-sewing type geeks out there

This is a question for the other sewing dorks out there. I'm interested in branching out from making luggage to clothing. Tailored jackets, outerwear (athletic & formal), vests, and maybe shirts are what I ultimately want to make ( Read more... )

I would suggest staying far away from the Big Three (pattern companies) for something like this. I do costuming and corsetry, and I think something like this might work well for you. Yes, it's a frock coat pattern, but also includes two versions of a vest, including a notched collar one that looks like a great approximation of what you want. Can't speak for this specific pattern, but I can say their Victorian corset pattern is the best out there I've found (and I think I've tried them all). I've also found their corset pattern easy to use as a base to alter from, and their directions reasonably good, for pattern directions. (Which IMO almost always suck ( ... )

Yeah -- the big pattern companies give me the impression that they haven't updated their patterns since the 50's. Thanks for the suggestion! I kinda want a frock coat too, so....

Yeah those guys are good.

I'm also a favor of jumping into the deep end right away. Have fun!

I've used the Folkwear pattern numerous times, both for mens and womens vests. It's a great starting point.

I second the idea of Folkwear. I would also say that some poking around on the intardwebs will give you links to costumers that sell their own patterns. However, I've never been able to discern which ones suck. Ymmv. I have found decent patterns through the major companies, but you have to have a pretty good idea of what you want when you go looking.

I also think this obviously means you and your lady need to come with my gentleman and I to some of the costume balls. :)
